Genesee Country Village & Museum

Encompassing more than 600 acres, the Genesee Country Village & Museum is the largest living history museum in New York state. Located in small hamlet of Mumford, New York, about 20 miles (32 km) from Rochester, New York, USA. First opened to the public in 1976, the authentic 19th-century Historic Village features costumed historians breathing life into many of the 68 relocated and restored historic homes, farms, shops and other public buildings. When you visit during the regular season you will find various historic trades and craftspeople as well as historic cooking and agricultural demonstrations. GCV&M is also home to the John L. Wehle Art Gallery, the Genesee Country Nature Center, Silver Baseball Park, a pioneer farm, and several Heirloom Gardens. Numerous special events and classes are also offered throughout the year. Our regular open season runs from Mother's Day weekend through Columbus Day, with special programs in November, December and March.

The Genesee Country Village has one of the best collections of art, costume, decorative arts and historic architecture in New York State and deserves to be much better known and visited than it is. The problem is that the staff basically gears everything towards fourth graders and this is basically a place that parents bring their kids to dip candles and dress up in olden time outfits. The gift shop should be great but has a terribly low taste level as do the concessions.

It's unfortunate, as it has some incredible buildings with incredible collections of decorative arts that should have a much more devoted visitation from discerning adults. They really need to call the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown and have them come and redo everything.

That said, there's a great gallery of Taos School paintings, an incredible textile and clothing collection and some of the most beautiful Greek Revival buildings you can imagine. It's just of I90 and you'll have it to yourself. Go. You'll be amazed.

I've come here annually for the last five years. It is a wonderful location - so much space to walk in nature. So quiet. Great, yet simple accommodations. Awesome food available for those on retreat. The Abbey is recently renovated and beautiful. The daily worship with the Monastery is rejuvenating. And of course, the Monk's Bread is the best around! Love my silent retreat every year.

I have been to the NY Museum of Transportation several times with my grand kids. We have enjoyed learning about older modes of transportation, the subway cars, the old buses and the trains themselves. A couple times during the warmer weather you can actually ride the engines and caboose car. When in the station at the Rush, NY end, you learn more about the railroads and the various rail road cars. It's a visit you will enjoy and very reasonably priced.

A brewery that makes beer both for the taproom/commercial sale and for specific places (private label). Spacious taproom with limited seating and restaurant (The Pint and Goblet) inside but I didn't eat there. The Caged Angry Monkey was a spectacular IPA and the music playing was awesome. Definitely would come back when in the area again!

We bought a groupon certificate for birthday party for 8 and took our grandkids.
The place is a little dated but had plenty of activities for the 8 grand kids.
We ended up buying a second pizza and drinks. 1 large wasn't enough. We did get a few tokens but deff purchased more.
The kids loved the play areas, games, mining golf and the go carts were the best.
After we had a great ice cream and had to drag the kids away after 2 hours.
Thank goodness my daughter, her boyfriend and 15 yr old grand daughter came. There is so much to do the younger ones wore us out.
More to do than chuckle cheese but not as good of a party set up. You get a reserved table , no cake , decorations and no rep to give it a birthday cheer and direction , like chuckle cheese but lots more to do and more room.
Great time we have been here before and will go back.

The Wadsworth Homestead

Two brothers moved to the frontier in 1790 to risk their inheritance on land, This elegant manor house was built by James Wadsworth in 1804, and remains in Wadsworth hands to this day. Original furnishings and ephemera are part of the unique appeal of this venue, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places in 1972, that is open to the public for scheduled tours.

I would highly recommend this tour, it is not often that you get a private tour which is given by a family member of the historic home. Will was extremely knowledgeable and included lots of detail and interesting facts not only about the home but also about how his family came to Geneseo and the adorable stories about the house relocation. This tour is a highly recommended Geneseo Gem ! Call them to book a tour !

This is an amazing place to visit. It has been on our to see list for a couple years and we finally made it. Well worth it. Even my teenagers enjoyed it! When we first arrived Joe greeted us at our car with a friendly hello and told us about the treehouses. He let us go explore and then came and checked on us. He answered our questions and pushed my daughter on the amazing swing. His 2 daughters came and cheerfully talked to us and played with us in the trees. Although it is free, we were happy to put some dollars in the donation box they have at the entrance. Thanks Joe and family!

Instead of a hay ride, I took a quick and beautiful drive out to the railroad museum and we enjoyed it so much! We took a very short ride to the barn where they served donuts and cider and then the boys got to each pick a small pumpkin from their little patch they created. Do remember for your visit, they are not taking you to a farm! My boys are 5 and 3 and this was absolutely perfect for their ages. Honestly, 7 might be bored. We were allowed to sit on the back end of the caboose and just enjoy the beautiful day and I really appreciated that- a day with my boys and some trains is one I won't soon forget!
