One of AlUla’s most famous settlements is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, carved tombs are from around 2nd century BCE until 106 CE.
Madain Salih is not only Nabataean tombs. Yes, they are wonderful(but closed til about October 2020). It's the whole region, actually vast parts of Northwest Saudi-Arabia which is just a secret full of mountain desert landscapes of incredible beauty. And you have it for yourself! It's easy to rent a car (we took Hanco in Tabuk, one way rentals easily possible) and explore Saudi-Arabia on your own. Do it asap, because now you can feel like a pioneer! Saudi-Arabia is perfectly safe, amazingly cheap and its people incredibly hospitable!

Once a place of nearly 900 homes, 400 shops and 5 town squares, much of the Old Town of AlUla’s mudbrick and stone architecture still survives today. A citadel perched on a prominent outcrop along the eastern edge is still accessible via a restored staircase. Those interested in history will be delighted to discover that this site was occupied within recent memory, offering unique opportunities to gather and share oral histories encapsulating a disappearing way of life.
Firstly- went for work so got a chance to see the palce from above. The place will be ready and open to public soon. It is stunning- it is always wonderful to see history and the past being preserved...the houses are great from above and there are toilet facilities and shops below.

The world’s largest mirrored building, registered in January 2020 by the Guinness Book of World Records, a place where mirrors have been effectively used as a key design feature. The word ‘Maraya’ in Arabic translates to ‘mirror’. Enjoy this remarkable multipurpose conference and functions venue.

Religious or ritual practices at Hegra were concentrated around Jabal Ithlib, a natural mountain outcrop to the east of the city. A special feature is a rock-cut chamber known as the Diwan, where ritual or elite banqueting and political discussions took place.

AlUla has long been a place of journey, travel and exploration; Hijaz Railway station construction began in 1900, reaching Madinah in 1908 and opening in Damascus in 1913. As a result of World War I, the railway’s full 1,300 planned kilometres were never completed.
You learn something new everyday especially when you travel. Hejaz Railway runs from Damascus to Medina with Amman to Damascus in current operation. I love riding on trains and the history behind railway so oops for not knowing too much about the history o Jejaz. This one in Hegra or Mada'in Saleh is a small railway museum dedicated to the history of the railway. A much larger project in Medina opened in 2006. I did not get a chance to visit Medina by the way. Non-operating sections and building are now a tourist attraction in Medina Terminus. It was restored in 2005. I think having this railway so close to Hegra is just super and I look forward to the day when tourists could catch the train and travel across Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia. Given how Damascus is the starting point of the Hejaz Railway- it would be a dream come true to catch the train from Damascus across this beautiful region called the Middle East. I must linger longer next time- not too many people which makes the visit even more better
