Visitors to this endless waterless sea can enjoy driving, hiking, visiting a museum and sledding down the huge dunes.
I've been to Great Sand Dunes and other than size White Sands has it beat hands down for it's scenic beauty and geologic interest. We didn't have time to do it justice, going only on the 1 mile nature walk. With more time we would have driven the full hour loop road and stopped at a couple of other locations, probably done the 5 mile loop hike. Still, what we saw was quite impressive.

Know your farmer, know your food! Ever wonder what a super food is? Do you know the climate of Alamogordo is identical to Iran? Eagle Ranch is a self contained agribusiness which means that everything that is done to the crop, from start to finish, is done right here on the premises. Our most popular attraction, the FREE farm tour, offers visitors a behind the scenes look at harvesting and processing pistachios while providing unusual and little known facts about one of America's favorite snacks. The tour takes about forty-five minutes. You will visit the field, the processing plant, the salting and roasting facility, as well as our packaging and shipping departments. It's a walking tour with wheelchair accessibility. Don't forget to leave plenty of time to visit our gift shop. We offer FREE samples of our pistachio products and candies, as well as our award winning wines. Enjoy a glass of wine or pistachio ice cream on The Grove Patio overlooking the pistachio trees. The Grove Patio is even available for private events. Free Tours Daily June - August: Monday through Friday, twice a day at 10:00 AM and 1:30 PM September - May: Monday through Friday at 1:30 PM Groups: We are happy to accommodate groups of 10 or more by appointment. The White Sands Missile Range reminds the visitor of the momentous events of 1945 and how a bomb ended World War II.
This place is a true monument to the development of the USA missile programs of the past century. From the primitive Nike Hercules interceptors of the 1950s nuclear armed bomber era, to the modern Patriot and THAAD ICBM interceptors of the 21st century. Superb!

Set against the west-facing escarpment of the Sacramento Mountains, Oliver Lee Memorial State Park features scenic views from 44 campsites, historical exhibits and a fully restored 19th century ranch house. Springs from Dog Canyon support a variety of unexpected plant life on the short nature trail and for the adventurous, the Dog Canyon National Recreation Trail rises 3,100 feet in 5.5 miles.
This campground has some sites with a shade shelter and some that don't. I believe the ones with the shelter are available with a reservation. The sites are nicely spread apart and fairly private. The bathroom was large, clean and had 2 showers. There was a small visitor's center which was wonderfully air conditioned but I couldn't see anyone manning the desk (which was fine). There are some nice displays explaining the history of the area and some nature exhibits. You can sign up to take a tour of the Oliver Lee Ranch house, which occurs on Saturdays in the afternoon.

This museum complex includes the space museum, Planetarium, IMAX® dome theater, Hubbard Space Science Education Facility, and the International Space Hall of Fame.
We live nearby and have been quite a few times. It’s a shame they don’t offer nicer discounts for military and their family members because this is one of the only things to do in Alamogordo and it gets expensive visiting multiple times a year when we have friends and family venture out and visit us while we are stationed here.
It’s not very exciting for me, can walk around in less than an hour and see everything.

Alameda Park Zoo is the oldest Zoo in the Southwest.
What a neat little zoo! There was a good variety of animals. I especially enjoyed the bird enclosure. Admission is inexpensive and about an hour was adequate to look around. The enclosures are basically cages, but they are large and you can see the effort that has been made to enrich the habitats. Highly recommend.

Take a simulated walk on Mars and see space exhibits that span exploration from the earliest rocketry experiments to futuristic Space Station 2001.
I spent a whole afternoon there and wished I had started sooner. I would definitely advise this is a good place to spend an entire day for anybody genuinely interested in discovering more details about our early space exploration program. The building itself is a marvel to behold, and it is very accessible for handicapped individuals also. The exhibits are all pretty well self-explanatory, and you are free to browse for as long as you like on things that catch your attention. Alamogordo is such a friendly military base city; the people there all are open to help in any ways you ask.

Toy and Model Train museum with displays and operating layouts of many US model gauges. Outdoor 1/5 scale park train ride about 20 minutes of travel in the local park. Kid's train play area while waiting.
They charge too much for train rides and admission. It is a neat place to visit. The employees are friendly and knowledgable!

Non-profit 501-c-3 NM corporation formed to educate the public concerning the Shroud of Turin and the connection to New Mexico history through the world's largest scientific expedition ever launched to study a single artifact, which began in NM because of a proof developed in NM in 1976. Our mission is to make the Shroud of Turin an experience available to everyone through facts, exhibits and research. The exhibit features a full-size color scientific grade image of the Shroud and the only interactive 3D exhibit using a VP-8 Image analyzer, as well as recent 3D works by Dr. Petrus Soons. OPEN BY APPOINTMENT. MULTILINGUAL EXHIBITS.
I don't have the words to describe this experience. It does not matter if you belong to a particular religion, or not.. The history and science is fascinating. It was surprising to find this tucked away in Alamogordo, New Mexico. People from all over the world visit here. I can only say that I am very very glad we stopped by for the presentation. It was an experience I will never forget.

I saw Fiddler on the Roof there and it was on par with shows I've seen in NYC and Vegas. Seating was limited. Also they have a concession stand with snacks and drinks.
