The Ionian Islands are splendid, cinematic paradise. The waters are bluest blue, the sands are achingly silky and smooth. Everything looks heavily Photoshopped. But that's just Mother Nature, in all her unspoiled glory. Zakynthos is the largest of the Ionian Islands, and it's as fruitful as it is beautiful, boasting a bounty of crops like olives and grapes. Music is a huge part of the local culture—you can catch a concert or festival almost any night of the week, and you'll be captivated by the sights and sounds of Zakynthos performers.

Admittedly the title of this post is a bit of a boast, but bear with me. This is our second consecutive year coming to Zante, last year we stayed at Alykanes and this year we opted for Vasilikos having read the posts on this site about Plaka and Gerakas being the best child friendly beaches on the island. We went to Plaka (need to pay for parasols), Gerakas (beautiful but relatively busy), Porto Roma (don't bother) and this beach, Vasilikos or Mivratzis as it's called on Google maps and local signs. The reason we thought it was fantastic is because it was abandoned for the most part. Not sure if it's Covid-19 related, but the beach bar complex at the back of the beach is abandoned and the lift that leads down from the Royal Zante is out of action. As the bar place has been abandoned some folk had taken some of the benches from the complex to the beach for seating and after 1pm the trees at the beach provide perfect shade so no need for parasols. The water was crystal clear and perfect for our for year old to splash about in and learn to swim in as its a nice sandy beach that stretches quite far out before getting deep. I imagine the rocks on either side of the beach also provide good snorkelling as we saw a few folk doing this and they appeared happy. Not sure the beach has been like this (empty) for years or whether it will be like this again, we're just grateful we got to enjoy it. FYI there was no amenities but we didn't mind as brought snacks and water.

A small islet with tropical beaches and sea caves located just outside Keri Beach (Limni Keri) inside the bay of Laganas, in Zante (Zakynthos) Island, Greece
Starting out from the port near Zakynthos we saw Leatherback turtles swimming alonside the boat, had a swim through a cave opening, spent time on Turtle Island swimming off the shallow beach and enjoying a spectacular view of the beautiful island of Zante, really good value trip

Did this on the way back from the Shipwreck, seen on here to book a small boat, which was absolutely true, we used Alykes VIP boats, the caves are beautiful and our captain manoeuvred into the smallest of the caves, whilst the bigger boats just slow down and sail past!!

One of the top monument to visit while you'll be in Zakynthos. Saint Dennis 'church has built before the big earthquake of Zakynthos and it's an old monument that in the its interior includes many saint historical paintings as also and the relic of Saint Dennis
