Rich in mountains, islands, glaciers, farmlands and fjords, Sogn og Fjordane is best known for Sognefjord, the longest in Norway and the second-longest in the world. One of its arms, Nærøyfjord, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as is the 12th-century Urnes Stave Church near Lustrafjorden, an excellent example of traditional Scandinavian wooden architecture. Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on mainland Europe, is home to a national park with several museums and visitor centers.

Had a great time hiking on the glacier. We did the Short Blue Ice Hike with Jostedalen Breførarlag and had a great experience. As advertised, it is a bit of a trek in - 15 minutes on the boat (each way) + 45 minutes uphill to get from the lake to the glacier. Does require at least a moderate fitness level (one person in our larger group was struggling to make it up to the glacier so turned back before going on the glacier). Great views along the way. Once on the ice, we stopped a number of times for pictures and a snack break. We had a great Nepalese guide who definitely knew his stuff - we felt very safe on the glacier - and was able to take some pictures for us as well. Make sure to clarify what parking lot to meet at (its the one on the lake) and leave enough time to get through the toll between the lot at the glacier center and the meeting point. Would highly recommend for anyone visiting the area! Leave time to look around the exhibits at the Glacier center before/after as well - great views off the back deck.

Short farm visits and walks with our llamas. We offer informal and reasonably priced activities with the emphasis on visitors having the opportunity to experience close contact with our herd of llamas. They can be taken on a walk by the river, which is both special and relaxing. We also keep an old breed of Norwegian sheep and sell home grown strawberries and raspberries.
We had such a great time walking the lamas. We walked to a viewpoint and the view was great. The lamas seemed well taken care of and had such great personalities.

Highly recommend taking this route instead of the worlds longest tunnel. Raw nature, sheep, small “ice bergs”, lakes, rivers, snow, raw rock and breath taking views - basically what you would expect going over the mountain. Would love to take my bike on this route some time as well - bring warm cloth ;)

The drive up this valley is absolutely breathtaking! One of the most beautiful drives we have taken in an already stunning country! Beware though, the road is narrow and not everyone understands that everyone needs to give space to each others! Lots of good hiking opportunities are also available through the valley.

Olden was our most scenic stop on a recent cruise. Sailing up Nordfjord is stunning with the mountains and beautifully coloured water. The village of Olden is cute with a bit of shopping for those inclined as well as a nice place to walk around. The old church in the middle of town is worth popping in to see the interior. We chose an excursion up to see Briksdal Glacier - an excellent choice. It included a scenic bus ride followed by a stimulating hike with beautiful views along the way.

Stretching 204 km (120 miles) from Solund at the coast to the mighty Jotunheimen massif and Jostedalsbreen glacier, Sognefjorden is the longest fjord in Norway. The Sognefjord has a maximum depth of 1308 metres (4300 feet), and is Norway’s deepest fjord. You can choose between different boat trips to experience the beauty of the fjords all year round. At the mouth of the fjord the climate is maritime, whereas the innermost parts of the fjord have a much drier inland climate. Because of the contact with the warm ocean water of the Gulf Stream, the main fjord never freezes to ice. The Sognefjord has several distinctive fjord arms winding their way between steep mountains to end in small, picturesque villages. One of them is the world-famous Naeroyfjord, which has now been included on UNESCO's World Heritage List. This is the most narrow fjord arm. The innermost fjord arm is the Lusterfjord, and this fjord has a beautiful green colour because of the meltwater from the glaciers. Some places along the Sognefjord the difference in altitude between the highest mountain peak and the lowest point in the fjord is about 3000 metres (9800 feet). Fjords represent a unique landscape that is found in only a few places in the world. A common definition of a fjord is a long and narrow inlet of sea often surrounded by high and steep mountainsides. Some 20 000 years ago the fjord was shaped and formed by glacial ice in river valleys.
We took the ferry from Gudvangen to Flam via the Sogne Fjord and the scenery was breathtaking. Incredible waterways flanked by mountains which, until you see another ferry to put them into perspective seem quite normal, when in fact they are pretty huge! Still, calm water and a pleasant couple of hours cruising around a beautiful part of a beautiful country

Visited Olden and Briksdal in June and it is definitely worth the visit and it exceeded all my exceptions. As you take the tranquil 45 minute walk to the glacier you are surrounded by breathtaking snow capped mountains, lush green spots of grass and mountain flowers and flowing waterfalls which you can stand beside and soak up its spray of water. However, if walking isn't your thing or you are unable to, you can take a troll car up the winding paths to the glacier although if you are able to make the trek it is 100% worth it.

Fantastic. If you stay in Aurland you should definitely drive the amazing narrow road up to Stegastein. Coming up, the view is amazing and scary???????????? Enjoy if you like heights????

This church is NOT a typical European Cathedral! Built in 1180 during the time of the Black Death, this was a wooden church built by a seafaring people. Inspite of its imposing exterior size it is incredibly small on the inside. Well worth the visit and stop at the museum too.

On the hills surrounded by powerful mountains, and with a spectacular view of the fjord, you will find Otternes Farm. The farm consisting of 27 buildings, each with its own function, was probably cleared for cultivation before the Black Death. In addition the old cultural landscape with hills, wells, stairs and stone structure is intact. Experience old handcraft techniques and food made in traditional style. Open: 1000-1700 daily. Guided tours at: 10.00 + 12.00 +14.00 + 16.00.
We were here in mid August and were th only ones. You can walk here from Flam. We were driving and it is 1 or 2 minutes off the main road between Flam & Aurland. Spectacular views down to the fjord. We got to explore the old buildings without crowds.
