Dominating the city in all directions from its lofty perch on a hilltop above the Old Town, one should not miss the opportunity to visit this brooding 14th century medieval castle. A steep but non-stressful climb up the cobbled path from the Old Town brings one directly to the gates of the courtyard and the imposing statue of Pope John Paul II, who visited the castle and its integrated Roman Catholic Cathedral of St. Emmeram, within, during his visit to the city. I would imagine that this design feature was to ensure the safety of the sanctuary during wartime over the centuries. Originally built in the Gothic style, Nitra Castle is impressive in its somber beauty and the apartments and artifacts are worth the climb up Zobor hill, if only for the great views of the town and its surrounds.

Great view of the Basilica. Bridge itself very photogenic, even so at sunset. You can go to Slovakia on foot in a few minutes if you want to cheat and “tick” another country.
