Baden-Wurttemberg’s second-largest city after Stuttgart, Mannheim lies at the confluence of the Rhine and Neckar Rivers and is rare among German cities for its layout, a grid pattern (or “quadrates”) similar to those found in North America. The grid was originally plotted in 1606 and emanated from Friedrichsburg fortress, which later became the site of Mannheim Palace. Today, it partly houses the University of Mannheim. The city’s iconic water tower and its beautiful Luisenpark are must-sees.

City Park
Great place to walk, picnic and relax in with animals, flowers, lakes and lawns. Lots also for children to do!

We just wanted to have a look at the Technoseum - and ended up spending about 5 (five!) hours there. The Technoseum offers lots of insight into the development of technology in the last 200 to 300 years. Everything is presented in a most interesting, even fascinating way with lots and lots of 'hands-on' presentations. It gives you an excellent impression of the industrialization as such and of its impact on man. And it tries an interesting look into what the future might hold. For kids (aged 6+) this museum offers more learning and hands-on possibilities than one child can handle in a day - so you'll have to go there more than once.

Mannheim WaterTower Always worth a visit in summer or especially in winter where the Weihnachtsmarkt surrounds it, fond memories of my US service time in the 70s and then later with my Glassblowing Stand
