Launched in 1817, HMS Trincomalee is the oldest warship afloat in Europe.
A really interesting and enjoyable place to visit. Although it was a cold blustery February day the welcome was warm and the guided tour round the ship was full of interesting facts and stories. Superb atmospheric cafe and lots of old fashioned quayside workshops. Would be a good day out for children too.

The northern home of the National Museum of the Royal Navy. A fascinating journey through time, set in an authentically-created historic quayside of the 1800s. Experience Fighting Ships, a powerful insight into the tough lives of sailors from around the time of Admiral Lord Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar. Learn how they were press ganged and see what life was like on board HMS Trincomalee, the oldest warship still afloat in the UK and the jewel in the historic quayside of Hartlepool.
Fantastic day out with family very good educational place to learn the kids about day gone by value for money

The Heugh Battery Museum preserves the only First World War Battlefield in the UK and commemorates the Bombardment of the Hartlepools which took place on 16th December 1914. On site we have a reconstructed trench, lots of large artillery pieces and rifle collection. Our volunteers are very happy to give you a guided tour or answer any questions you have about the collection and the history of the museum site. We have a cafe serving delicious hot and cold food, the cakes and scones are all baked fresh on site. You can pop in to the cafe without visiting the museum. We are fully dog friendly in the museum and cafe, and hope to provide a great day out for you and your family.
We don’t usually do historic sites and museums. We only went in because we were exploring the area and it started to rain. But so glad we did. We spent 90 minutes exploring the museum and found it fascinating. Loads of guns, tanks and other military vehicles. Interesting history about the German attack on Hartlepool in WW1, and the first British soldier to be killed in an attack on British soil. Fascinating reconstruction of a WW1 trench. Exhibition of military arms from muskets right up to the AK47 that is still in use. You can climb the command post for a view over the sea or descend underground to the magazines. Finally, a good cuppa in the cafe. It feels very amateur - but in a good way. The staff and volunteers are all so interested in the site and the exhibits and their enthusiasm shows. Great people, interesting museum and very pleasant seaside location.

Always clean, tidy, respectful people and great for a good walk. One day the cafe will be open again and that will be a good thing. Cakes and drinks were always great. Very good to dog owners and for kids.

Love the North Gare and Teesmouth area, it is stunning. Free car park which is always a bonus, then you can just wander. At low tide it is nice to walk all the way along the sand to the mouth of the Tees, and round towards the Able yard where the crabbing rings are. Seals often pop up in the water or along the sands. Fantastic array of wildlife, stunning views, great to watch the ships come in and out of the Tees, and a great back drop of current and declined industry. Lovely sands where you can sit and watch the world go by, beach is pretty clean, and despite the industry, water is crystal clear. Lots of crabs and sand eels about. If you are careful, go onto the old pier at the North Gare and walk to the end - it really does feel like you are at the end of the world!
