Laramie County Library

Established in 1886, when Wyoming was still a territory, the Laramie County Library System (LCLS) located in Cheyenne is the oldest continually operating county library system in the United States. Territorial citizens of Cheyenne rallied for five years to fund the first library building, opened in 1886. It was located on the third floor of a business building on Carey Avenue and after that in the basement of what was then known as the Central School. When Wyoming became a state in 1890, state statute dictated library service should be provided for residents by the county government. With funding being withdrawn from city resources, American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie offered $50,000 toward a new building in 1899. Three years later, the Laramie County Library opened on May 19, 1902, on the southeast corner of 22nd Street and Capitol Avenue, offering 10,000 square feet of space. Almost sixty years later, the need arose for a larger building, and on October 19, 1969, a new building

Even if you are not in Cheyenne during Frontier Days in July, you can go to this museum at any time. The memorabilia about Frontier Days and Wyoming are interesting and nicely displayed. What really stands out is that there is also a huge stage coach collection, including carriages from other parts of the country. There are so many that there is an entire auditorium sized room as overflow of carriages. It's amazing that they are all in this one museum.

The park has trails with ample signage and an excellent visitor center with info on the local flora and fauna. The hike to hidden falls is well worth it, the falls were beautiful in the summer and the cold water was a refreshing break from the heat at the time. There are also lots of nice mountain biking trails of you prefer that to hiking. Stop in and check it out if you're passing through!

This is my preferred route between Cheyenne and Laramie in the summer. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife. You'll almost always see antelope and deer but you might also see elk, moose, etc. It's a nice scenic drive and is perfect for motorcycles.

Bit-O-Wyo Ranch

This place is just simply amazing. Amazing. Through and through. I'll start at the beginning I guess. Ok, so you get to the location and have to drive down this crazy, long, windy, hilly, gravel road. The first day there it was intimidating - you don't see many short, flat, gravel roads where I live, let alone one that appeared ready for xtreme off roading to my city-eyes. There were funny signs along the drive that reassured you you were going the right way though and after that initial drive we quickly learned that it really was no big deal at all to navigate to and from the location. The cabin we slept at was perfect. Picture perfect even. It has all the comforts of home, but the views of paradise. We woke up to a stunning sunrise, a gorgeous deck just perfect for coffee among the sounds of the horses in the nearby pasture, and even a friendly ranch dog named Hiya that liked to cruise around the grounds. The cabin was comfortable, peaceful, clean, and amazing. We did a trail ride - it was about an hour long, and trust me, we are not experienced horse people. My husband has seen a few horses from a distance, that's all the riding experience he had. I took some lessons when I was the ripe old age of 12. My 8yr old was the talented one as we signed her up for a few lessons this spring, but my 6yr old had only ridden a carnival pony in circles once. So to say the least I was a bit curious how this would all work out - - - but it was fine! Better than fine! We all got along with no issues at all and we got to see the amazing area around the ranch too. Truly a memorable experience. We've been home a few days now, and we saw many many sights on our vacation (Yellowstone/Tetons/Devil's Tower/Rushmore/Rodeo/etc) and all my kids can talk about is the horses at this ranch. Well, the horses and the dog Hiya :) Let's see. We also saw the dinner show that's on site and it was fabulous. You get a dinner - steaks, beans, baked potato, apple sauce, brownie - that is top notch. Maybe I was just extra hungry that day, but that food was perfectly cooked. I've eaten at some top rated restaurants at home in Chicago. Forget them. This steak was cooked and seasoned to perfection. The dinner show part was a band of sorts with...(let me show my musical ignorance here....) I believe a banjo, a violin, maybe a fiddle??, a guitar or two, and an upright bass? as well as two vocalists. There was some singing, some jokes, some jibbing on fellow bandmates, and really just an overall good time. From young to old, we all really enjoyed the show and the atmosphere. So. As far as a review? Maybe I need a few more days to get over the afterglow, it's only been a week or so, but my review is as-good-as-it-could-possibly-get. I can't even think of a negative - or even a less-than-great thing to comment on. Well, if I'm really trying, perhaps I should mention that there's no AIR in their stinking air there. The whole place (I'm pretty convinced the whole dang state) is at a high altitude. And they don't know what the heck flat land even is.....so I spent a ton of time huffing and puffing and chugging water because altitude sickness is a real thing, let me tell you!
