Cathedrale Saint-Etienne

Reviewed By mariont276 - Newburyport, United States

The massive fortress-like facade does not really suggest what awaits you in the interior--a magnificent nave with two domes, one painted with ancient frescoes, and a plethora of tiny chapels all around the aisles and the apse. On the exterior, the north (?) portal is really magnificent with impressive sculptures above the door and floral decorations around the arches. The stone used for the architecture is alternate courses of black and white limestone, enhancing the sculptural decoration. Off the south side of the church, you open the door into an amazing cloister with elaborate flamboyant Gothic decoration.

Come any Wednesday or Saturday morning--all year round--and you can experience this wonderful market. You can put together a fabulous picnic for the day from the roast chickens/ducks on offer, the delicious fruits and vegetables, and stop at any of the nearby bakeries for that fabulous pastry for dessert. Maison de l'eau et Fontaine des Chartreux

Reviewed By sylvnott - Greater Manchester, United Kingdom

We decided to visit this museum and were told of the Fontaine by the lady in charge while we were there. She made a point of seeking us out to tell us of the Fontaine and it's history and relevance to the museum. This was after we had ascertained that she spoke hardly any English! Some of the information was in English so that made it more enjoyable for us, and we managed to work out a bit of the rest. We wandered along the river up to the Fontaine and marvelled at the clarity and depth of the water there. As it was a Sunday when we visited, the narrow road was closed to traffic, but the following day proved how popular it is as it was quite busy. At this time of year, December, you would do well to check when the museum is open. Well worth a visit.
