We spent an afternoon with an English guide from the Kumamoto SGG Club—-Mieko Okada who was our personal guide at the Kumamoto Castle & to the Suizenji Jojuen Gardens. If you go to Kumamoto these two sights should be at the top of your list of things to see & places to go. Hopefully in the next few months more of the reconstruction will allow for an actual tour of the castle, but the grounds, walls, and views were amazing none the less.

A great spot to feel the nature. Try the clear water directly from the spring, you may even purchase a bottle to bring some back to your hotel.

The operation of these tour buses is until January 31,2017.
Aso-san, the symbol of Kumamoto Prefecture, is the largest compound volcano in Japan, situated in the central part of Aso Kuju National Park. The central cone group consists of five peaks, the highest 1592-meter Taka-dake, still active – – Naka-dake, Neko-dake, Eboshi-dake, and Kishima-dake. This mountain boasts arguably the largest caldera in the world, extending 25 kilometers in the north-south direction and 18 kilometers in the east-west direction. We took a highway bus (2 & half hours) from Kumamoto Bus Terminal. We booked the seats online in Singapore through the Japan BusOnline portal. Remember to bring a copy of your bus e-ticket. Yoy can also get the bus ticket at the bus tetminal at least one day before departure during office hours. We spent 2 days at Kurokawa to do the walking routes. All routes are about 4 km return. Route 1 is the easiest & you get to enjoy streams, brooks & forest scenery. Route 1 has some slight inclines but not difficult. Very scenic mountain views. On a clear day, you can see Mt Aso. Route 2 was closed during our time of visit. Most people go to Kurokawa to do onsen hopping. You can get the pass at the Information Centre for 1300 yen & choose 3 onsens from a selection of 20 plus onsens to enjoy. Do note that the onsens are spread out so you need to do a fair bit of walking to onsen hop. We did not buy the pass as we're happy just using the onsen at our ryokan Ichinoi. When we were walking route 1, we stopped over at Yamamizuki Onsen for a quick dip to refresh ourselves. It has lovely riverside open baths. Entrance fee was 600 yen. Bring your own towel or pay 300 yen for one at the counter. There is a free shuttle back to village centre every 30 mins. The village comes alive with day trippers from Fukuoka, Yufuin & other cities in the late morning. There is a small street to browse the little shops & have lunch. If you are staying overnight, best to have meal plans with your ryokan as all the shops & eateries close at around 5 pm.

This is one of the easiest walk and be the closest to a waterfall. Entrance fee of 300 Yen is well worth it because the toilet is clean and the walkway is well maintained. Must visit on your way to Kumamoto.

The Japanese garden I started to make than 1963. In area of about 73,000 square meters and it is a compact in which it is said that Japan's largest garden, rich in spring water from Mt. Aso, and has created a world of different dimension to the urban space. Landscape, is also said to have reproduced the landscape of the Tokaido, including Fuji Gojusantsugi.
One of the most beautiful sites in Kumamoto. I always return here, and will make sure to take friends to share the beauty of this park/shrine.
