Wow. This park looked amazing on google maps, but when we went there it was even more spectacular. We went here for 3 hours in September. Took a ferry from Hakata port (a very nice 15 min ride, not too many waves and you get to see great distance view of hakata city) to Saitozaki ferry terminal. This park is enormous, best way to see everything without taking forever is to hire a bike. It's around 500Yen for 3-4 hours. There are designated bike paths in the park, however you can take the bike in certain areas where there is lot of foot traffic. There are lot of bike stops where you can park and have a walk through different attractions. There is a bit of everything at this seaside park, there is a zoo, bird area, picnic areas, lot of gardens and is very kid friendly too - such as kids pools, picnic benches etc. Great place to go to escape the city for a few hours, especially on a lovely sunny day, whether your a couple or a family, there's something to do for everyone. When we went, there wasn't too many flowers blooming. This place must be exploding with people during cherry blossom season.... If you go to Fukuoka, be sure to come check this place out, you won't regret it xD

Ohori Park

I discovered this park 4 years ago and everytime I need a place to restore my mind, I use to go there. The best period to visit it it's especially during the sakura season because it's full of cherry trees and the landscape becomes very suggestive. The park surrounds a lake also and you can walk all around it breathing the freshness of flowers and trees. This park is a piece of silence in the middle of the noise, a piece of peace in the rushing days of the people.

Kitakyushu City Kawachi Fuji Garden Wisterias Blossom

In the spring, the Kawachi Fuji Gardens open their Wisteria tunnels to the public. Wisteria, lauded in Japanese poetry, bloom strongest between April and May. The Kawachi Fuji Wisteria are especially lovely, as the hundred-year old trees are arranged to blossom around domes and trellises, with clusters of flowers hang down in delicate rows, leaving only patches of streaming sunlight in between. The magical sight attracts visitors from all over the world. Over twenty species of Wisteria compose the two main tunnels, one 260 feet long, and the other 720 feet long. Each features an explosion of petals from lavender to deep royal purple, with bursts of pink, blue, and white in between.

Kawachi Wisteria Garden is one of highlights for the sightseeing in Kitakyushu. The season is at the end of April and the beginning of May. To avoid the crowds, you should obligatorily book an entrance coupon at convenience store. On a less crowded day, that coupon is used as an entrance ticket. For a crowded day, you have to pay an extra fee at the entrance gate in addition to that coupon. To access the site, the most convenient is driving a car. Otherwise, you can take a public bus from JR Yahata station, and walk about half an hour. It is not bad, and even recommendable to walk, because the way to wisteria park is a very pleasant promenade.

Ohorikoen Japanese Garden

Reviewed By shannonl161 - Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan

I have been wanting to go to the Japanese Gardens at Ohori Park in the middle of Fukuoka City for sometime now and with Autumn in full swing the thought of seeing some red crimson Japanese Maple Leaf gave me even more motivation to go and check it out. The location of this attraction can be seen from the outside but only the tops of the trees so I really wasn`t expecting too much but once inside I was in fact blown away by the size, features and overall ambience of the place. Not only are the gardens impeccably maintained but the central pond really sets the centerpiece of the whole place. I was a little rush for time on this day and only spent around 25 minutes here but in all honesty I could have easily spent an hour or more here, just lapping up the breathtaking scene and ambience. On this day, the Teahouses and outer buildings were closed but I lucked out with 2 sets of Japanese couples getting professional pictures taken around the grounds. I wished them luck, sent a message of congratulations and was able to snap a couple of photos of the ladies and gents in their magnificent Kimonos. I am sure the gardens are pristine all year long but i will absolutely want to come back during spring to see the Cherry Blossoms and Azalea foliage during this period. Once I get the times and the booking process under control I will also document and blog about the Green Tea Ceremonies that are held twice a month. I am looking forward to see what kind of facilities are available for the International Travelers as I may include this traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony on my Fukuoka Walking Tour Itinerary.
