The Yuri Gagarin United Museum includes the following departments: Yuri Gagarin’s childhood museum in Klushino The interior of the house reminds of a peasant house in the Smolensk region in the 1930s, that atmosphere surrounded little Yuri Gagarin in his early childhood. In the courtyard there are outbuildings, a dugout in which the Gagarin family lived during a year and a half of the German occupation, and a well. It was the last place Yuri Gagarin visited before his death. Near the house, placed under the glass dome, there is an automobile “Volga” that belonged to the first cosmonaut. Thunder Tower of the Smolensk Fortress

Reviewed By alexey2612 - Moscow, Russia

I am a history buff, as you know. So I couldn't miss the Thunder Tower during my short visit to Smolensk. It is situated in the south-western part of the fortress. It is called thunder because it used to be a powderhouse. Now it is a military museum. The entrance is from the ground floor (literally) from the inner side of the fortress. The museum covers the military history of the middle ages mainly. From one of the upper levels one can enter a short stretch of the fortress wall.

Smolensk Fortress

I can proudly brag about covering the whole length of the fortress wall. I did not do it at once. It took me several years to do that. In the past some sections were neglected. Anyone could climb over there and walk amid piles of garbage. This time I was pleasantly surprised to see a well-kept wall.
