The final seventeen kilometres of the Coa valley contain hundreds of Palaeolithic engravings along the river’s banks, extending all the way to the River Douro. This zone has been made into Portugal’s first Archaeological Park. This Park was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 2 December 1998. This entire open-air art collection, which buries the old myth of rock art only existing in caves, is exhibited in the Museum through original pieces of movable art, replicas of “rock panels” and interactive zones that use modern digital technology. The art can also be viewed in loco on organised visits to the valley with specialised guides (advance booking required). Visit also (no advance booking required) the Museum which provides an overview of the Ice Age Coa Valley rock-art, its archaeological context as well as magnificent views over the Coa and Douro rivers. Museum opening times: High season: 09:00 AM - 06:00 PM; Closes at lunchtime (01:00 PM - 02-00 PM) in low season from the 20th of October until the last day of February. Closed on Mondays, 1st of January, 1st of May and 25th of December.
architecture 1a, location/view 1a, content 1a, kitchen/restaurant 1a, guides 1a, its an outstanding place, beautiful, educational, full of sensuality and experience, adventure even... if you can, book the night tour to the rock art places. fairy tale!!!

We can only feel happyness with such grandiosity. This valley gives it's visitors an immense feeling of accomplishment. For the ultimate experience, climb the mountain until Torre and the descend using the same route. Start at 6am, and see the sun rise at the gorge between the two mountains. Have a break at "Covão da Areia", climb further to Torre to lunch. Take a small break and initiate your descent at 4 pm. Make a second break at "covão da Areia" and storm the last 6 km descent while seeing the sun going down in the horizon. The mountains will glow red. In the end, take a swim in the fluvial beach and have dinner in the town. The nature at her best. P.S. You have to be fit to face the climbing.

Travelling from Porto to the South across Serra da Estrela was a good decision. Plenty of nice views. Many attractions on the way (water reservoirs, RAMSAR protected area, charming glacier valley, ski area etc.). More on the pictures.

The building of Guarda Cathedral was ordered during the reign of King John I, at the initiative of D. Vasco, Bishop of Lamego. Construction works began in 1390 but would only be completed in 1540, during the reign of King John III. Therefor the Cathedral became one of the most emblematic in Portugal with a structure which creates a symbiosis between Gothic and Manueline styles. The granite building stands out because of its fortified shape with its pinnacles and counterforts intercepting refined Manueline decorative elements. Inside, you should not miss the chance to contemplate the magnificent main retable made in ançã stone, a work carried out by João de Ruão’s workshop in Coimbra and a great example of ancient sculpture during the Late Renaissance period. Almeida is amazing lovely town, history everywhere you look, the fort is unreal we walked for hours into every nook and cranny, in the town square they were making their famous Portuguese chicken, how perfect is that. I went there in the morning to take some photos, beautiful place with clear and clean water. Went past later in the afternoon, and very full. No surprise as it was extremely hot. Next time I will try to go for a swim.
