Fujian (Chinese: 福建; pinyin: Fújiàn; pronounced [fǔtɕjɛ̂n] ( listen)), formerly romanised as Foken, Fouken, Fukien, and Hokkien, is a province on the southeast coast of mainland China. Fujian is bordered by three provinces: Zhejiang to the north, Jiangxi to the west and Guangdong to the south, along with Taiwan 150 km to the east, across the Taiwan strait. The name Fujian came from the combination of Fuzhou and Jianzhou (a former name for Jian'ou) two cities in Fujian, during the Tang dynasty. While its population is chiefly of Han origin, it is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse provinces in China.

This has to be our favorite destination in Fujian. We spent two days in the area with a private guide taking us. Everything was green and beautiful with a calming effect. Whether hiking up the mountains, drifting down the stream in the bamboo raft, or just walking around the park will make the trip all worthwhile. The rock formations are just incredible. Lots to see there.

Its roots go back to the Tang Dynasty, when it was first built in 686. Amazingly beautiful mulberry tree which is also believed to be 1,300 years old. This is a large temple complex with 120 buildings over a 89,000 square meter area. Lots of beautiful sculptures.

Interesting to visit the Hakka houses which are communal living house with hundreds of smaller rooms and living spaces for families. Apparently during President Ronald Reagan’s presidency, the satellites picked up these rounded structures and spies were sent into Nanjing / Yongding China to investigate if these were nuclear facilities or missile launch buildings. Only then did they realize that these were villagers living in large rounded tulou !

As part of a Viking Ocean excursion, we visited Gulangyu Island and enjoyed the scenery, Shuzhuang garden, and the piano museum. There is a cultural tradition on the island which also features mansions and impressive European style buildingd and bridges. I have numerous photos of our experience on the island.

Not many people know about the Tulous, gigantic multistory well-fortified fortresses in Fujian province, made by the Hakka and Minnan minority peoples from a mixture of mud, glutinous rice, bamboo and wood chips. There are over 30,000 of them still intact! Their shapes range from circular to square and have housed hundreds of people for centuries, some are even over seven hundred years old! The Tulous went relatively unnoticed by the world until the Cold War when US satellites picked up on these missile silo-looking buildings dotting the Chinese countryside. Of course, we had to check it out in case there were nuclear bombs being built. Since then, these buildings have gained popularity for being architectural marvels. In 2008, UNESCO declared them to be a World Heritage Site! We decided on the Tianluokeng (four dishes and one soup) cluster as we heard that it is most picturesque to visit. We took the train to Nanjing County, Fujian (not to be confuse with the city of Nanjing in Jiangsu Province) and road a bus over to Yushuiyao where we were staying in a Chinese homestay since all the Tulou rooms were booked. Each Tulou is still very much lived in by multiple generations and some let you rent a room in them. On your visit, you can also sample their locally grown tea or even have a home cooked meal inside them! Be prepared that if you go at it alone like we did, without a tour group, that it is not a short, easy journey! I think it took us over three hours to actually get there and then figure out our tickets and have our homestay pick us up. Even though traveling here is a hassle, it's worth it to see and experience these historic buildings.

Location: No. 16, Macao Road, Gulou District, Fuzhou City Historic background: Fuzhou Lin Zexu Memorial Hall is a memorial hall of a historic Chinese figure named Lin Zexu, i.e. the national hero of China. It was founded in the 31st year of the Guangxu Period of Qing Dynasty (1905) with a covering area of about 3,000sqm. It comprises Yimen Hall, Yubei Pavilion, Shude Hall, South-north Flowery Hall, Quchi Building, Zhubai Building and other main constructions. It has the garden style of South China and is a protected unit of cultural relics of a provincial level. Descriptions: The Hall comprises classical gardenlike architectures. Today, all the halls and buildings are converted as the showrooms of Lin Zexu's life and career, including the life stories of Lin Zexu, his contributions to the Opium War, his involvement in disaster relief and water irrigation, his reputation as the first Chinese to learn from other developed nations of the world, his handwritings, etc. Opening time: 09:00-17:00 (closed on Monday) Ticket fare: Free; the visitors can register with their ID card at the window to the south of the gate and receive a free ticket. Bus routes: Visitors can take Bus Routes 1, K1, 2, 8, 11, 20, 54, 66, 76, 77, 80, 101, 117, 121 and 86, get off at "Daoshanlukou" Station and walk westward along Daoshan Road or Jipi Road until Macao Road.

This is a very nice place to visit in the city, it has many temples inside with a big lake in the middle and many trees and benches to sit and relax. The entrance ticket is very cheap, only 20 CNY. It was the only place we have to pay for. All the attraction in the city are for free.
