Absolutely gorgeous. The weather is very variable and changes quickly - the first day we went (parking at the main parking lot) had a sunny forecast but when we got there the entire mountain top was covered in thick fog and it was pouring rain so we couldn't see it at all. It was also very windy and approaching freezing in October. The next day we hiked over from the Zao Onsen Ropeway and the weather was perfect although still jacket weather. Very glad we made the second attempt because it's fantastic - the unreal color of the lake along with the alien landscape.

If you love Nosawa Onsen but hate the crowds, try something a little further away. Zao Onsen in the Yamagata Prefecture has 12m snow seasons, lovely powder, loads of lifts and fun local foods to try plus the very amazing and unique ‘snow monsters’. (Eerie snow and wind blasted trees near the peak of the mountain). If you enjoy first tracks and make early starts avoiding the Zao ropeway that takes tourists up to the monsters, you’ll have a fabulous time. And then there is the private and public town onsens and apres skiing. Sensational.

Naturally formed beauty created over the course of 80 million years. Lining 600m of the cave is what is said to be the greatest number and variety of stalactites in Asia. There’s a lot to see in Takine Goten, the largest hall in the cave, including the Tsuki no Sekai, which features the first light control system for stage productions ever introduced in a Japanese limestone cave. Enjoy this mysterious and impressive underground fantasy world.

After catching several trains to get to the Hakodate ropway, we were treated with friendly and very helpful staff... the ropway provided excellent 360 degree views of Mt Fuji and the suuoundung beautiful scenery as we descended to lake Ashi. On arrival at the lake we transferred to a pirate ship and took a leisurely cruise around the lake. Return trip via train from Tokyo and several hours in the area makes for a very long but enjoyable day trip..
