Seen from the top of Pen y Ghent and knowing that in about 6-8 hours you will be looking up at its vast bulk, takes some beating mixed emotions! Variety of terrain on the approach in, followed by a relatively short scramble up. Take your time and watch where you put your feet! Your respect for the mountain will be rewarded.

Picked the perfect late October day to tackle this walk for the first time. We parked up mid-morning at the Golden Lion Hotel, paid our £2 honesty parking, then set off into Horton in Ribblesdale to find somewhere to eat before our day's walk. Horton in Ribblesdale was closed! The Golden Lion Hotel didn't open until 3pm, The Crown Hotel didn't open until midday. The Pen-y-ghent Cafe was closed (permanently, it seemed). A zoom back into Settle was needed just so we could buy a sandwich and some water. So, be warned! Pack a lunch or make sure you have a good English under your belt before you arrive in Horton, because you'll find nowhere to eat or buy food anywhere there before midday. The walk up Pen-y-ghent was - when we finally set off - amazing! A good, steady ascent gives you the most fantastic views. The short clamber up and over rocks at the very end of the walk was huge fun and our sense of achievement when we reached the Trig Point was immense. We had wanted to take the diversion to see The Hull Pot on the way back but managed to miss the signpost! One for next time.

We are Parthian Climbing Manchester | Harrogate | Reading | Southampton Drop us a call or visit us online to book your first climbing experience.
The climbing centre very kindly made space for my son and some friends to have a group session on the occasion of my son’s birthday when the planned party venue were unable to fulfil their booking. Despite the short notice it was a great hour of climbing and all those attending were engaged and had plenty of opportunities to climb. The staff are used to teaching kids and had plenty of strategies and tools to keep several ten year olds fully involved and encouraged to try their best at the various challenges. I want to thank Jonny, Josh and Emily who all helped rescue my son’s birthday party - really appreciate you all!

I attended a Webinar on the Geography of the Yorkshire Dales was really interesting, covered geography and geology, flora and fauna, and some fascinating insights into the human history of the area too. Mark is really enthusiastic and super knowledgeable, I didn't want it to end, and to be honest I don't think he did either! Strong recommend, makes you want to be out there, which sadly at present isn't possible...

A brilliant day out all round. The peregrine falcon and the golden eagle were something else! Please go! Thanks in particular to Andy & George who were so knowledgeable and entertaining & obviously passionate and caring about the birds. We had free admission from the hotel, but it is so worth giving a good donation. We have visitors coming from France in October and we’ll without a doubt be making the trip from Leeds.
