Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park shelters foxes, sea lions and otters and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing.

This is a wonderful place. It's a private nature reserve where the owner will give you a tour of the special forest. You must ring first to arrange a time. It costs 10,000 pesos and is worth every penny. You learn so much about the forest and its wildlife. The owner has a wealth of knowledge about the trees, geology, flora and birds. You find it at km 15 on the road down to Cucao. (20 minutes from the Hostal Palafito- also highly recommended!)

This is a must-do if in southern Chile! You are taken by boat just off shore and brought up aside the barrier islands to view two types of penguins in their natural habitat!
