Top 10 Things to do Good for Adrenaline Seekers in Hokkaido, Japan

August 14, 2021 Marlin Saiz

Hokkaido (北海道, Hokkaidō, literally "Northern Sea Circuit") (Japanese: [hokkaꜜidoː] ( listen)), formerly known as Ezo, Yezo, Yeso, or Yesso, is the second largest island of Japan, and the largest and northernmost prefecture. The Tsugaru Strait separates Hokkaido from Honshu. The two islands are connected by the undersea railway Seikan Tunnel. The largest city on Hokkaido is its capital, Sapporo, which is also its only ordinance-designated city. About 43 km north of Hokkaido lies Sakhalin Island, Russia, whereas to its east and north-east are the disputed Kuril Islands.

From the top of the ropeway, you can walk around the area. It's a loop and it's an easy walk where you can see the steam vents. I also hiked up towards the summit of the mountain. It's quite steep with loose gravel along the way. I only made it about half way because I wanted to catch the last ropeway back down. Give yourself enough time if you want to hike all the way to the summit and back.

Shiretoko National Park

Shiretoko, which originated from the Ainu word, “Shiri Etoku” which means “far corner of the earth” is exactly located at the northernmost tip of Japan (excluding the Northern Territories). Shiretoko National Park is characterized by the rugged grand landscape formed by volcanic activities and drift ice as well as abundant wildlife. In particular, large mammals such as brown bears and killer whales as well as a number of large endangered raptors inhabit the park. With them at the top of the hierarchy, a variety of wild animals strongly cohabit together. Such biodiversity and the link between ecosystems of the sea, river, and forest were highly valued, and Shiretoko was registered as a World Natural Heritage site in July 2005.

The view from Mt Okura Observatory is stunning, at night you can see the city lights spread out in front of you. The cable car was enjoyable. By the way, if you take the bus to the Observatory, make sure you know the time of the return bus, as taxis may be scarce.

Cape Kamui

Reviewed By O5633KXsharonm - Abingdon, United States

This is a beautiful place for hiking. There are many steps and in places, the trail is quite steep. If you are afraid of heights, you might not want to visit this area. But, this is a beautiful place in Japan. The trail is at the top of high hills and in most places it is only about 2 to3 feet wide. We walked all the way to the end and were treated to some amazing views of the peninsula and the ocean. There is a little place to eat and a gift shop at the beginning of the hike, near the parking lot. There is an unmanned lighthouse at the end but it wasn't open the day we were there.

Furano Ski Resort

Furano is the northernmost Prince Snow Resorts. The ski resort consists of 2 zones, Furano and Kitanomine, which have 23 trails in total. You can reach the summit directly by a 101 passenger Furano Ropeway and see a great view of the Daisetsu Mountain Range. There are 2 ski-in ski-out Prince Hotels at the bottom of each area, in which you can enjoy après. Hot springs near the ski area and sightseeing in Furano town are also fun experiences.

If you are looking for a place to ski with powder snow in Hokkaido, this ski resort is highly recommended. I went to Furano ski resort in January 2019. This ski resort is a pretty quiet ski resort with barely having any queues on the ski lift. The most amazing thing is the spectacular view on the top of the slopes but sometimes the weather on the high slopes can be hard to see. This place has 2 big mountains with various mixes of ski slopes suitable for beginner skiers and snowboarders. The food on the slopes were actually pretty delicious. With a variety of food to choose from, I assure you that you will have lots of energy to hit the slopes once more. Overall, this ski resort is very good and also family friendly. Want to ski on great powder snow, this place is also a great choice as well.
