Ancient Mayan city historians now believe to have been bigger than Chichén Itzá.
Saying that Calakmul is breathtaking will not give this place enough justice. It has beautifully preserved ruins, clad in vegetation, which gives them this mysterious and adventurous look. Waliking amids the jungle and discovering all this ancient places is totally a different experience compared to any other ruin. The site is also so huge and vast , that is likely that you will see very few tourists even in crowded periods. The site is reachable by a 40km bumpy road, which will take you 1h and a half from the main road. Be prepares to stay there at least 3 hours and bring lots of water. You will need them. A bit off hand but totally worth it

We took a guided tour by Humberto to the Rio Bec ruins. He drove us through the forest on a quad (15km). You would not be able to visit these sites by car. If you are in the area, Rio bec is really worth the visit. The ruins are deep in the forest en still in good shape. Humberto was very knowledgeable about the history and showed us all the best ways to climb the structures. We got a hold of him because the lady at the tourist information point in Xpujil called him for us.

If you plan to go close to Campeche state, you must not miss Calakmul. It's one of the biggest Maya sites from the classic era and very complementary to the post-classic sites like Chichen Itza. Since it's quite remote, there aren't many visitors. Plan in enough time, since it takes almost 2 hours to get there from the main road, and the site it huge, so there's a lot of walking. Also, you absolutely want to climb the pyramid, which also needs some time planned in. We were traveling Yucatan via rental car, but we decided to do Calakmul with a tour operator (Ka'an Expeditions, see my separate review). This turned our to be a good move, so we didn't have to be worried about the road and the car, and were't as tired as you'd probably be when driving all the hours on your own. If you go on your own, make sure you bring food and water, as you should plan to spend at least 3 hours at the site. The site itself left stunning memories with us, including the stunning views from the top of the pyramids. I've been traveling to many places, but haven't seen anything comparable so far.

Campeche(west)side of the Yucatan peninsula is on the Gulf of Mexico with extensive mangrove forests, creeks and small lakes. The predominant gamefish here is the Baby Tarpon. Campeche area is shallow and crystal clear. With few exceptions, that means most of the baby tarpon fishing is sight-fishing. The exceptions are fishing in the dark, casting into heavily shaded areas of the mangroves.

Small place where you can see 2-3 million bats. First a couple of bats come out to explore the area. We saw a hawk catching a bat. Then, arround 7:30 the rest of the bats came out like a tornado. Some fly right above your head, amazing! Really recommend to see this spectacle yourself.
