June 15, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

Worcester (/ˈwʊstər/ WUUS-tər, locally [ˈwʊstə] ( listen)) is a city and the county seat of Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. Named after Worcester, England, as of the 2010 Census the city's population was 181,045, making it the second most populous city in New England after Boston. Worcester is located approximately 40 miles (64 km) west of Boston, 50 miles (80 km) east of Springfield and 40 miles (64 km) north of Providence. Due to its location in Central Massachusetts, Worcester is known as the "Heart of the Commonwealth", thus, a heart is the official symbol of the city. However, the heart symbol may also have its provenance in lore that the mass-produced Valentine's Day card was invented in the city.

I just had a great time at Escape Games Worcester with my 11-year-old daughter and five of her friends! We did the Conspiracy Room, which was the perfect level of difficulty for us. The owner was helpful and responded quickly to my questions when I was planning this outing and the staff member today was very helpful and gave us some handy tips. It felt safe and it seemed like extra precautions were taken during Covid19, and we were the only participants at the time so we were able to follow social distancing rules. It was a great experience and my daughter and her friends had so much fun! I definitely recommend doing it!

After 18 months of virtual museum visits I have finally made a real trip to the museum where I spent four hours. It is funny how I travel all over the world and miss out on spectacular treasures in my own neck of the woods. So today I ventured to the Worcester Museum of Fine Arts (40 minutes drive from my house) and enjoyed its fantastic collection of paintings, antiquities and decorative art. The museum owns phenomenal El Greco’s “Mary Magdalene”, Claude Monet’s “Waterloo Bridge” and yet another version of his “Lilies”, this time in pale pink, stunning “Golfe Juan” by Paul Signac, Gauguin’s “Brooding Woman”... just to name a few... Some of the most remarkable treasures of this fantastic museum are its huge mosaics from Antioch (the lost ancient city) and its meticulously rebuilt 12th century Chapter House of the Benedictine Priory of Saint John at Le Bas-Nueil. Also, I was lucky to see two very interesting exhibitions: “The Art of Kimono” and “What the Nazis Stole from Richard Neumann”. The latter presents 14 paintings and sculptures from the once extensive art collection of Dr. Richard Neumann. They were regained by Dr.Neumann’s family after 75 years of tireless efforts to get them back.
