The only narrow-gauge railway line that still provides regular passenger traffic. You have a chance to go on a ride twice a day. Enjoy rides with a diesel locomotive or you can look out for special rides with steam one. There are two interesting exhibitions in both cities - Alūksne and Gulbene. You should definitely visit them.

Learn the harrowing resistance stories of the courageous individuals at the exhibition set up in an actual Soviet prison. Amazed by how this modern small scale history museum tells the story of the occupation and the Latvian resistance in such a strong, personal, well curated and beautifully (awarded) designed way. Of all things to see in Cesis, Burning Conscience is at the top of my list and I would highly recommend visitors to walk through the gate onto the courtyard and step into Elīna’s exhibition to learn everything about the recent history of Latvia and Cēsis in particular.

Visited in sep 17 as part of a work visit , really humble and somewhat hair raising as to what lurks below, like walking back in time , even for the 80s 90s is like Britain in the 40s as to be expected by the Soviet Union. People live on site too

Museum is located in Alūksnes New Palace. You will get to know different minerals, lots of different birds' songs and information about wonders all over the world. You will be surprised about fluorescent mineral collection.

Wine shop by the Ligatne Winery. Ligatne highly appreciated wines from berries, fruits and flowers. Apple vodka "Ferryman". Degustations for individuals and groups.

I have visited the winery in the end of August. This definitely should be on a map of wine lovers. In the shop made in the cave you can have a tasting of different wines and later on purchase the one you have liked. Few kilometers away is the winery itself with a little spoon factory where if arranged in advance you can have lunch made by a local village women, for additional fee see the winery itself and see the process of wood spoon making (if pre-arranged). I liked the idea that all family is in this business and if you are on your way from Riga to Tallinn or around Sigulda, it is a nice spot to color your day.
