Ufa (Russian: Уфа́, tr. Ufá, IPA: [ʊˈfa]; Bashkir: Өфө, Öfö; Bashkir pronunciation: [ʏ̞ˈfʏ̞], pronunciation (help·info)) is the capital city of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia, and the industrial, economic, scientific and cultural center of the republic. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 1,062,319, making it the eleventh most populous city in Russia.

December 14, 1938 the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre opened its doors for the audience. During the first two years of work it presented 13 premiers and welcomed about half a million spectators. The opera and ballet scene saw rapid development. The talented artists came to the theatre, a repertoire was enlarged, and cooperation with the prominent musical theatre figures began. Today the theatre plays a significant role in Russian culture. The theatre team consists of opera and ballet companies, a symphony orchestra, a chorus and a children’s studio. The People’s and Honored Artists of Russia and the Republic of Bashkortostan, laureates of international and All-Russian competitions and prizes work in the theatre. The repertoire includes masterpieces of foreign, Russian, Bashkir, and contemporary music.
