A stronghold of Mayan culture, San Cristóbal’s colonial stucco walls and Spanish tile roofs contrast with the surrounding villages, which remain home to an array of Mayan-descendant Indians. The city itself is a delight. Paired with the cultural diversity surrounding it, there’s nothing like it in Mexico.

Before traveling to San Cristobal I had researched Mezcal bars and Puro Mexicano Mezcaleria caught my attention as the Mezcal bar to visit. My friends and I (all fans of this wonderful spirit) couldn’t wait for the bar to open on our first night. The bar did not disappoint. As we entered, we were excited to see so many offerings of this fine spirit. Luis, the owner is very passionate and knowledgeable about all things Mezcal and will guide you through some wonderful tastings. If you’re traveling to San Cristobal de las Casas and enjoy Mezcal, please go to Puro Mexicano Mezcaleria and have some pours with Luis. You will be glad you did. It’s only about two blocks south from Calle Guadalupe (the main pedestrian street) on Benito Juárez and the doors are usually open by 6:30pm (closed on Monday).

One visit to this colorful San Cristobol art hub is not enough. There is a lot to see. I returned several times! And, it's an enjoyable place to visit. The store/gallery is often bustling with activity as local and regional Mexican artists hang their work, pick up commissions, or stop in for a chat. If you arrive during these times, chances are you'll be swept up in the conversation and invited to meet the artists. If you enjoy Mexican art, check out Arteria. There are items for sale at every price point. Don't miss las piedras in the back. This is a terrific store with a dedicated, English-speaking staff.

Enzue Open Art Studio is an exquisite gallery and workshop! During my stay in San Cristóbal I had the opportunity to take their 3 day linocut for beginners class. Husband and wife, Fernando and Enzue have a beautiful way of seeing the world that is woven into the way they teach their classes. This class taught me to enjoy the process of creating, rather than creating to achieve a final outcome. In the three day workshop you get to work outside in a beautiful courtyard, listen to great music, sip excellent tea/coffee and learn the steps of linocut to create your very own piece of art. This experience has definitely been one of the highlights of my trip! Laurelle

I studied at Instituto Jovel twice before and learned so much that I MOVED to San Cristobal de Las Casas to study there every day. Six years in Mexico and five Spanish–language schools later, it is Instituto Jovel where I have some real hope of becoming fluent. All the reviews you are reading here are true. The Director of the Spanish Language School hires and supervises excellent teachers. He models kindness and patience, and everyone - the receptionist, the teachers, the accountant, and the genial gardener are friendly and welcoming. The classes are small or private and are held in airy classrooms open to an amazing and lush garden. Students come from around the world with all levels of Spanish, and all seem to agree that this school is amazing. Say hello when you come – I’ll still be here!
