Named for a local swamp fish, Paraty sits on Brazil's southeastern coast, 125 miles south of Rio, with the Bocaino Mountains at its back. The small colonial town's center is a national historic monument with well-preserved buildings on its pedestrian-only streets. Take a boat trip out into the bay to the flotillas of islands and coves nearby. Explore sugarcane plantations and hike or take a train through Atlantica Forest. Keep an eye out for the monkeys that roam the cobblestone streets.

Art gallery in the historic center of paraty
I was lucky enough to meet the artist in residence and thoroughly enjoyed both the gallery and talking politics for an hour. A very impassioned man. For me his paintings delved into the images of solitary and connection to others.

Tonight I had an absolute magical experience. The massage I received from Samantha made me transcend, but let's start from the beginning. I was literally running around town to find a place to relax, and I'm glad Sam was located near the historic center and in front of my hostel. Samantha gave me an ayurvedic and reiki deep tissue massage where she was applying a powerful combination of breath and energy work. She was small and did not apply lots of pressure but she still manage to release all my tension and reinvigorate me more than anything I have ever experienced. She would press with one fingertip on certain spots on my spine and body, each time she held that acute concentration I felt a wave of euphoric muscular and nerve relief. It's almost like my entire parasympathetic system was activated and responding to her technique. My body has never known, or maybe has forgotten, this level of relaxation. Transcendental in nature, the deep level of relaxation made me have a profound epiphany-like experience. Her precise touch would literally send shockwaves and shivers throughout my entire body, from head to toes. My body and spirit and mind was being awakened by this loving and caring spiritual guide.

Join renowned Brazilian chef Yara Castro Roberts and retired French/American executive Richard Roberts to prepare and enjoy together a refined Brazilian dinner with the best of Brazilian cuisine. The menus are from six regional and historical cuisines such as Minas Gerais, Bahia, Amazonas, Cerrado. These are also the subject of our new book “The Brazilian Table” that have been nominated and a finalist at International book awards. The evening begins at 8:00 PM sharp and end about 11:30. We start by serving a caipirinha and Richard Roberts shows a unique way to make it. Next, guests are invited to gather around the stove to join or just watch the preparation of the dishes. Then we all sit at our decorated table and enjoy the four-course dinner we made together, with wine from Argentina or Chile. We end with coffee or mint tea and a tasting of aged cachaça.
I love learning about food and so make a habit of doing a cooking class where possible when on holiday. There are two differences with Richard and Yara’s - first of all their explanation of the links between cuisine, culture and history, which really adds to the enjoyment of the food. Secondly, the story of how they came to be in Paraty and their passion for what they do makes the entire evening somewhat magical. To an extent what has been written in some previews reviews is true - the cooking duties are divided between the group and so you do not personally construct each part of the meal from start to finish. However, I think this is a huge benefit as you engage much more with the other guests during the process and there is more time to enjoy the meal over excellent conversation. We had a truly wonderful evening and if I ever come back to Paraty I will definitely book another evening with Richard and Yara!
