Top 10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Mecca, Makkah Province

March 19, 2022 Fernanda Pittenger

The prophet Mohammed's birthplace is Islam's spiritual center and is strictly off-limits to non-Muslims. The pillars of Islam state that all Muslims with the means must undertake Hajj, a pilgrimage to Mecca, once in their lifetime. Those who visit the holy city are rewarded not just by proximity to landmarks and religious sites crucial to the religion, such as the Masjid Al Haram (Holy Mosque), the Mountain of Light, the Black Stone and the Well of Zamzam, but with the forgiveness of all their sins.

Black Stone

This holy stone is the eastern cornerstone of the Kaaba, the ancient stone building towards which all Muslims pray. Many Muslims believe that the stone (originally white but now black from absorbing the sins of man) fell from heaven during the time of Adam and Eve.

The Black Stone, al-Ḥajaru al-Aswad, "Black Stone") is a rock set into the eastern corner of the Kaaba, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. It is revered by Muslims as an Islamic relic which, according to Muslim tradition, dates back to the time of Adam and Eve. The Black Stone was originally a single piece of rock. It is surrounded by a silver frame which is fastened by silver nails to the Kaaba's outer wall. Polished smooth by the hands of pilgrims. Islamic tradition holds that it fell from heaven . Muslim pilgrims circle the Kaaba as a part of the tawaf ritual during the hajj and many try to stop and kiss the Black Stone, emulating the kiss that Islamic tradition records that it received from Muhammad.[SAW] Muslims do not worship the Black Stone.
