Top 10 Things to do Good for a Rainy Day in Mackinac Island, Michigan (MI)

December 12, 2021 Lean Nau

Charming Mackinac Island is a throwback to old-timey seaside leisure, from the candy-colored facades of downtown shops to the impressive (record-breaking, in fact) front porch of the Victorian-era Grand Hotel. Mackinac is world-famous for its homemade fudge, available in every flavor you can imagine. Work off your sugar high with a round of golf, a bike ride along a seaside trail, or exploring the limestone bluffs of Mackinac Island State Park.

13yo daughter and 10yo son had an amazing experience pounding on the anvil and creating blades of steel. The results were some unforgettable memories and some pretty darn cool (and sharp!) souvenirs. The owner was great with the kids and they felt they did the majority of the work themselves. Knife making ranged from $25 to $100 depending on size, and it takes about an hour. Located on top of the hill behind the green and red carriage building.

This was the first year in 15 years that we were not able to go to Mackinac Island. I wanted to get my husband a new t-shirt for his birthday as a surprise. I ordered (via website) a blue/gold short sleeve t-shirt with the simple Macinac (M) logo. I was contacted ny the owner and told that they did not have the shirt I ordered in stock due to a vendor issue. I was given the offer to choose anything I wanted for my husband and they would expedite shipping. How awesome is that!! I chose the same t-shirt that I originally ordered, but in gold/blue. Micah shipped me the gold/blue t-shirt AND a long sleeve blue/white t-shirt with the Mackinac Island (with horses) logo!! The package came within a day or so and I was so surprised to see TWO shirts. The quality of the t-shirts is great! I can't wait to shop at Threads of Mackinac next year in person and to thank Micah in person. My husband loves his new shirts!

The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum

Be Inspired. Nowhere else does such a rare and exceptional collection of Mackinac-related art and photography come together to tell Mackinac’s story. In complement to the natural beauty of Mackinac Island, The Richard and Jane Manoogian Mackinac Art Museum allows visitors to experience fine and decorative arts inspired by Mackinac through the ages. One of the most diverse art museums in the region, the museum’s collection offers no shortage of beauty and history – from hand-beaded Native American garments and 17th and 18th-century maps of the Great Lakes, to one-of-a-kind pieces from the height of Mackinac Island’s Victorian era. Original photographs from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century present the beauty of Mackinac as captured by the camera’s eye. Featured are the works of William H. Gardiner, including dozens of his famed early-twentieth century hand-tinted views. This is Mackinac.
