African Heritage House

The African Heritage House overlooking the Nairobi National Park is described by the Architectural Digest as "an architecture arising from the sere Kenyan plain like an outcropping of earth, a vision of usefulness informed by the African genius for decoration" .Inside one journeys through a spectrum of African textiles, masks, art, artifacts, crafts, books and photographs. Designed by American Alan Donovan, co-founder of the African Heritage, Africa's first Pan African Gallery, the house is a combination of the mud architecture from across Africa. Tours cost a minimum of K. Sh. 3000.00 (about $40) for up to 5 persons and thereafter K. Sh. 500 for each additional person.

Nothing beats a mid-morning tour with the acclaimed Allan Donovan explaining each of the artefacts in his labor of love crib! It’s a rich display of African art and culture, each room specially curated with hand picked pieces. Getting to do the tour with Allan you can touch the pieces and ask questions about their origins and the tours. The house has excellent views as it overlooks Nairobi National Park & the new SGR line passes close to the park. The staff who work there are very friendly as well & treated us to a sumptuous meal for lunch after our tour. This makes for an excellent tour between flights even if all you have is a layover in Nairobi since it’s close to the airport. Advisable to go with friends for cost savings since a tour is 4,000 for a min group of 4 ; you can opt to add lunch at the end of the tour or even an overnight stay, rates are on their website.

We are a family of five and not big museum people however we spent just over 1 1/2 hour here. We did on our first day arriving to Kenya ( maybe time of year & day ) Friday @ 10am but the place was filled with kids on school trip, didn’t bother us if anything it added to the experience as lots of the kids were fascinated with my very pale kids ... the school kids wanted to say hi , shake hands & take pictures with my kids. We started our Safari the next day and this was a great way of getting a quick history of Kenya so that we were ready and knowledgeable for what lay ahead. We said no to the guide and that suited us as we didn’t want to go slow. There was lots of information written in English beside the displays which was perfect amount of info for us. We also went quickly through the snake house ... one of the workers took out one of the bigger snakes and I got great pictures of everyone with it.
