Dordrecht (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdɔrdrɛxt] ( listen)), colloquially Dordt ([dɔrt]), historically in English named Dort, is a city and municipality in the Western Netherlands, located in the province of South Holland. It is the fourth-largest city of the province, with a population of 118,450. The municipality covers the entire Dordrecht Island, also often called Het Eiland van Dordt ("the Island of Dordt"), bordered by the rivers Oude Maas, Beneden Merwede, Nieuwe Merwede, Hollands Diep, and Dordtsche Kil. Dordrecht is the largest and most important city in the Drechtsteden and is also part of the Randstad, the main conurbation in the Netherlands. Dordrecht is the oldest city in Holland and has a rich history and culture.

A lovely church with impressive high ceilings and large organ. Many stain glass windows and small side chapel/tombs with ornate carved stone lids. It was a bigger church than I expected and holds one of the first Dutch translations of the Bible.

Six centuries of Dutch paintings. A rich collection and temporary exhibitions, a high quality restaurant and a well stored museumshop. Situated in the oldest city of Holland: Dordrecht. Coming up in 2020: ' Aelbert Cuyp & Gainsborough - Constable - Turner' and 'Pioneers of Modernism. Collection Columbus Museum of Art'.
Amazing museum with quite a big and rich permanent collection of Dutch painters, majority of whom were born in Dordrecht. I have discovered Ary Scheffer for myself! Interesting temporary collection! One must not forget to reserve the entrance as I was silly not to do this, as lucky to be able to get inside due to less busy hours. In addition to great expositions in spacious building, museum has a beautiful restaurant for “Art and Dining” and the outside area for the events.

This museum is well designed within the restrictions of the building and its former owner. There is a lift to help people get up and down, as well as a handy little booklet in a range of languages for information.

Our spirits today are the result of seven generations of Rutte fathers meticulously teaching their sons the art of distilling, always with a passion for craft. We still hand-make our gins and genevers in the same tiny back-room where our founder, Simon Rutte, concocted his first spirits back in 1872. Simon, with access to exotic spices and fruits from the Dutch East Indies, put them to good use in the still. Soon his spirits were so popular that he transformed the family’s café out front into a liquor store. Thus, Rutte was born. We haven’t changed much since our origination. The family’s former living room continues to welcome guests as Rutte’s tasting room. Mini tasting: Every Friday and Saterday at 15.00 and 16.00 hours. Duration 25 minutes, includes a tour and little tasting

If you have time for only one museum in Dordrecht then I would recommend this. Wonderful interaction, a funny but also carefully-made film, interesting display in the entire museum focussing not only the history of Dutch independence but also the story of Dordrecht. English brochure is offered at the ticket desk by the friendly staff. The entire atmosphere is friendly and relaxing, and one can really actively join the visit since the very beginning rather than receive a flow of information without feedback. Having studied quite a lot on the independence of the Netherlands, I have to say that the museum offers a 'Holland-centric' narrative, which is quite common in Holland [not in the entire Netherlands], a version easily understandable but may be complemented by other perspectives [not the job for this museum]. However, it is still worth a visit. During my visit, there is a temporary exhibition about the State Bible of the Dutch Protestant Church. Focussing on the printing history, it shows many copies of this Bible and tries to tell a narrative about the Bible in Dutch. Well-done, but to some extent a bit simple. You may need more information from the temporary exhibition in Dordrechts Museum. Unfortunately, the temporary exhibition is only in Dutch.
