This museum documents an important period of China’s history with Chongqing as the wartime capital and headquarters of the Nationalists. General Stilwell played a pivitol role on behalf of the USA government keeping both the Nationalists and Communists supplied to fight the Japanese. Chongqing was bombed on 218 days resulting in heavy losses and damage to the city. Chongqing was supplied during this period by a massive airlift from India over the mountains known as the hump. In turn defended by volunteer USA fighter pilots imbedded in the Chinese airforce. Good to be reminded of a time when USA and China worked and sacrificed together for the greater good, something which the Chongqing locals have not forgotten.

In Chongqing we visited the Hugang Guild Hall – one of the few buildings to survive WWII. It is beautifully decorated and has life sized figures in various displays reflecting life during the Qing Dynasty. It has an Opera Hall and temple as well as a Guild Hall inside as well. The temple is in honour of the first emperor – Yu, who built the first dam to control destructive flooding of the rivers. We saw artists doing more snuff vase painting as well as leaf painting of Bunyan tree leaves. This attraction is well worth a visit as it is so interesting and unlike many places, is not overcrowded.

We hit this attraction during National Week at night so it was very busy. You are surrounded by restaurants, souvenir shops, food stalls and some of the most picturesque views in the city. We thought the crowds were a bit much at the beginning but found some areas were quite secluded and quiet. It is a steep area so bring good shows so you can walk up/down.

Our kindergarten took a trip to the museum and I went along to chaperone. Very glad I did as the museum was wonderful. Covering prehistoric paleontology, ancient Chinese history, the Sino-Japan war as well as other great parts of Chinese history, this museum is a must for all visitors to Chongqing.
