Calvert Marine Museum and Drum Point Lighthouse

In the Exhibition Building, you can touch 20-million year old fossils taken from Calvert Cliffs; discover the ever changing world of the Chesapeake Bay; and learn how humans shaped and changed this region over time, working its waters for survival and profit. Visit the Drum Point and Cove Point Lighthouses; see our outstanding small boat collection, take a ride on the Wm. B. Tennison, a log-built bugeye, and experience the Lore Oyster House, a restored oyster processing plant. My husband and I visited the museum during our stay on Solomon's Island and enjoyed our time there. Lots of great displays and enjoyed experiencing the fish and otters. We liked it so much we returned with our son later in the week. On our second visit we arrived in time for the last lighthouse tour . This is a great place for children - there is a separate kids area where they can do many different hands-on activities. Our son enjoyed seeing the jelly fish and watching the otters eat dinner.

Bayside History Museum

Don't miss a stop at this museum when you are in the area. Exhibits include the formation and geology of the Bay & a nice collection of fossils. They have artifacts, photos and exhibits from the heyday of Chesapeake Beach as a vacation venue earlier in the 20th century, with pictures of the amusement park, roller coaster and salt water pools. Upstairs they have exhibits about the War of 1812, Scouting at Camp Roosevelt, and a "cottage exhibit" with vintage furnishings. It provides a great overview and provides perspective on the rich local history of this area. They also have a museum shop and bookstore.

The Chesapeake Beach Railway Museum

A turn-of-the-century railway museum featuring photos and other related memorabilia.

Reviewed By RemaFuerte

We were in town after biking the Chesapeake Bay Railway Trail and decided to see the museum. It's small but full of fascinating local history I'd never heard of. At the turn on the century (1900-1935ish) Chesapeake Beach was a destination to rival Atlantic City and Coney Island with about 5,000 visitors a day in the summer. Who knew? The railroad was built specifically to funnel the crowds in from DC. Plenty of photographs and artifacts. The museum volunteer was very helpful and gave us a real appreciation of what we were seeing. We spent over an hour, there was so much to look at. Really enjoyed our visit. There's a small electric train garden and a scavenger hunt for kids. Parking is tight until the giant parking garage is completed across the street.
