The original Lyon Housemuseum opened in 2009. A unique, hybrid combination of a private residence and museum, the building is the first purpose-designed museum of its type internationally. Highly experimental, its new architectural form re-imagines the relationship between art and architecture, challenging conventional ideas about public and private space, as well as testing new ways of displaying and viewing art The Housemuseum Galleries opened in March 2019 on the adjacent site and represent a major expansion of the original Housemuseum. Designed by Corbett Lyon, the public Galleries are the result of a $14.5 million donation by the founding benefactors, the Lyon family, and is one of the largest dedicated contemporary art precincts in Melbourne Offering a new platform for works of contemporary art, architecture and design, the new Housemuseum Galleries provide a series of spaces for international and local exhibitions and events, where new ways of presenting and experiencing art
Lyon house museum features an extensive collection of works from Australian artists. The private home tour and the public gallery both have works worth visiting if you are interested in this art style or would like to know more.

The Rivoli segued from a 40s-style picture palace to a modern in-demand multiplex. The Rivoli, while usually said to be in Camberwell, is actually in Hawthorn East. The Art Deco-style buidling reopened in 2000 as a multiplex with eight screens, including a Gold Class Cinema. The Rivoli is walking distance to bustling Bourke Raad, one of Melbourne's most prosperous shopping strips.

Lido Cinemas is a brand new eight screen artiplex showing both commercial and new release art house films in the heart of Hawthorn's bustling Glenferrie Road. Our exciting new cinema hosts special events and ensures audiences enjoy an intimate and specialised cinematic experience with films that cater for everyone. Possessing a vibrant atmosphere and boutique, individually designed cinemas, Lido's diverse program of films and events will appeal to the many different tastes of film aficionados in the local area of Hawthorn and of wider Melbourne. The Lido's unique space has lost none of its grandeur since opening in 1912 when it first opened as a cinema. Innovative Architect Aidan Halloran has combined the building's original structural features with contemporary design and technology. Preserving the building's historic charm has been at the forefront of the design process and we hope you enjoy seeking out the cinema's gorgeous original features. The Lido sees some of the world's most cutting edge technology, including a 4K projector and Dolby Atmos, contrasted beautifully in our historic venue. If you look above you'll also find Lido's impressive rooftop cinema. Our rooftop forms as the first venue in mainland Australia to have a rooftop screen attached to the cinema.
Preview of a movie New Years Eve, lovely glass of champagne on arrival. Preview had been more popular than I assume expected so email went day prior informing that had been moved to biggest cinema. Seats had been reallocated, with care taken to ensure hopefully in the same previously preferred section. Staff were warm and welcoming, ensuring that patrons knew their new seating allocations. With late arrival, which there were quite a few, not the cinemas fault. Staff were requesting patrons to please just take any seat as they were disruptive to others. Great experience ????

Melbourne now has the largest number of kilometres of tram routes worldwide, a title that was once held by St Petersburg i Russia. Hawthorn Tram Depot was closed in about 1965 but the state government's VicTrack kindly stores an historic collection of older trams there. One has to be very careful in choosing when to visit as open days are not on many days throughout the year. There is however a good website and I think Facebook page. Carolyn in the shop greeted us. Admission is suggested to be by way of a gold coin - minimum A$1 - donation. The shop was clean and had a good range of postcards, books and other items including large posters. The tram collection has favourites such as an L and W2 class (types on which I travelled to my Catholic school, loving every minute) and many others such as the 'toastrack' tram, former cable trams (the cable car network closed in 1940 and predated electric trams' introduction, earlier) and small 'single truck' tramcars. There was an excellent display of the famous Melbourne Art Trams. This was airconditioned. The trams are all beautifully restored. Let's hope one day there's teh green light for some to operate again. Some modifications to teh overhead may be required, and franchise owner Yarra Trams would have to agree, but it's not impossible. Well worth a visit!

I just love having a local cinema. If I want to see a movie it is close enough to walk if I feel energetic. With it's renovations there are more choices for movies. I have been going to Balwyn cinemas since I was 17 and feel if we all support our local business they can survive and prosper. It's also a great place to have a snack before or after your film with good selection of cakes, sandwiches and ice-cream. And if you join the Palace club you can enjoy discount prices and some free tickets.
