From my point of view, the most interesting place is in the Yaroslavl region. I would especially like to thank the guide Irina for a very interesting two-hour excursion.

Beautiful Yaroslavl style church with perfectly preserved colorful frescoes depicting the life of Elijah the prophet and the life during the 17th century. Has 5 blue green domes and a bell tower. Frescoes have scenes of weddings, animals and every day work. Also, there are pretty gardens around the church. Definitely must see church.

The fountains are a part of a large park that is beautifully landscaped and includes a bear design in one of the flower beds. You can see the park best from the back side of the Cathedral. The statue is lovely as well. This is truly a beautiful site.

We were on a Russian river cruise, and our last stop before reaching Moscow was Uglich. It is a lovely city, and I felt like we were seeing and experiencing the "real" Russia here (both St. Petersburg and Moscow are quite glamorous and cosmopolitan - really like most other big cities, but with glorious architecture). The church was lovely, with beautiful frescoes and a steel tile floor. Definitely one of the highlights of Uglich!

The Yaroslavl Art Museum (YaAM) is the biggest art museum in Russian provinces. It is the only museum specializing in arts in the Yaroslavl Region. The YaAM is the winner of the first competition Window on Russia. The YaAM’s collection contains over 75,000 works of painting, drawing, decorative arts, applied arts, sculpture and numismatics.
I was in Yaroslavl' dozens of times but this first visit to its Art museum was a pleasant surprise. Nestling on the Volga river embankment among old lime trees this small XIX century mansion boasts excellent collection of Russian artists of the time. Ivan Aivazovsky, Vladimir Makovsky, Karl Bryullov, Ilya Repin, Viktor Vasnetsov, Vasily Perov, Arkhip Kuindzhi - these names may not say much to a foreigner but every Russian knows them. Anyhow, in case you're not that fond of the stuff take a look at icons collection. All in all, every visitor will find something to admire in this cozy and perfectly maintained building. There's also a charming garden behind where you may stroll for an additional fee. Very nice. Recommended.
