Har's Garden

Reviewed By 238samj - Indonesia, null

My experience at Hars Garden was amazing! On arrival i was greeted by him at the entrance to his Jungle after walking through his organic garden, with his dreadlocks hanging near to the floor and a big healthy organic smile. Instantly i knew that this was the ideal place for me. Slowly walking up the steps into my treehouse accommodation trying to take in all the jungle and nature around me. The treehouse was unreal! So simple so unique! It drops off probably 20m from the balcony into the deep jungle with a river and waterfall at the bottom! Waking up at 6am with a very slight few strips of sunlight shining through the jungle canopy, it was torrential rain and i had never felt ever before the pure deep form of mother nature like that! Laying in bed with the large glass windows in front dropping off into the deep wet jungle! The sounds of running water and birds, frogs, monkeys literally i did not want to leave this moment. 3hours later i finally prized myself out of my trance to start the course. Breakfast was a huge tray of fruit all from the garden then a main course of salad and ubi (potato) all obviously grown by hars and picked early morning by Hars while i was daydreaming into the jungle haha. What i learnt from this dude was not just how to grow great organic food but how to live in this world with the ecosystem and not against it, also how to create a ecosystem on my land in Sumbawa that was partly destroyed by corn farming. His information was golden and his mission in life (to save the ecosystem and work with nature) also to educate the word on how to grow organic food and to work with nature not against it. Using his own techniques and also others from hundreds of years ago. Basically he is a all time hero and the course was very beneficial to me and my family to create a new life over in Sumbawa living from the land and working with Nature. The course was supposed to be 2 days but i booked a extra day in because there was so much i wanted to learn! Overall i done 3 days 4 nights there, the three hour course a day was not really enough for me to take everything in, ideally i would like to take a week course 8hours a day haha but obviously Hars has a life too and to steal his time that much just wouldn't be fair. When i left he kindly gave me over 30 different types of herbs and strains that i could bring with me to sumbawa. Now all i need to do is keep them alive and spread hars knowledge to others who are grownig using monoculture techniques destroying the ecosystem. Thanks Hars and good luck with your future project in Sumba! Peace joy and healthy food Sir

Periuk Bali Cooking Class

This class was AMAZING. You visit a rice field, learn about traditional Balinese home styles, make an offering yourself, are taught about how to make coconut milk and oil and THEN make a spectacular 11-part meal. The hosts are incredibly helpful and informational and it’s a great way to meet people if you’re solo or do a fun interactive activity with your group. I would definitely recommend it to anyone in ubud!

Istana Tampak Siring

This legendary pond inside the inner courtyard at Tirta Empul temple is said to have magical healing powers. Pura Tirta Empul or The Temple of Holy water is located about 20 km northeast of Ubud. The temples name comes from the the sacred spring that flows at the temple.

Such a stunning place! We joined in the water and learned about the ritual from the locals! Change rooms and lockers are available for a small fee. Parking also costs a small amount. We did not take photos here since people are performing a ritual, and it would have been inappropriate.

Bali Bird Park

Enjoy walking around and get along with a thousand birds and its habitat. The Park is divided into seven regions that recreate the natural habitats of our birds, complete with indigenous plant life. You can travel from the deep misty jungle of Sumatra to Far East Indonesia and Papua to discover the native birds from these remote regions. Venture to other tropical continents too. See the South American exotics such as the Golden Macaw and the Congo Grey Parrot from the African Savannah. Enter into their real living environment and see how they play with their colony, how they breed, and feel their happiness. You'll love them. Be entertained with our various bird shows and feeding activities and also many special programs made only for you. Take photos from lots of incredible scenes and taste the richness of local Balinese culinary and international cuisine from our fantastic menus in the restaurant.

This was our fourth family visit. The park continues to make incremental improvements and is great for all generations of the family. It has always offered a great day out with well managed and accessible natural exhibits set in a pleasing park like environment - many of the birds are kept in the open or in bigger aviaries ( though some are kept in smaller cupboard cages, which seem to be being phased out). The birds come from a wide background including SE Asia, South America, and South Africa. There are specific areas for, and more focus on, Sumatra, Borneo, Papua, Java and of course Bali. There is a Komodo Dragon exhibit as well. The bird shows and feeding sessions are not gimmicky or exploitative and the staff seem genuinely interested in, and caring for, the birds there. There is a very good cafe onsite which is offers snacks and lunch ( Balinese and international food). Best suggested time to visit is mid morning to avoid the worst of the traffic, catch the shows and then have a later lunch and drinks when it gets hotter.

I really liked this musuem. Food and talking to locals are two of the best ways to learn about a culture. So is sitting back and observing it. So, also - is art. There is loads to learn about the Ubud and Balinese culture at this musuem. Once again, lovely airy buildings to wander through a short taxi ride up from the main street. Well worth a few hours of wandering around.

Tirta Empul Temple

A very active temple built around a bubbling spring, Pura Tirta Empul is an interesting place to observe Hindu devotees purifying themselves by means of ritual bathing. It is especially recommended to visit on a full moon day, which has special significance in the local religion.

Reviewed By 255nicholast - Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Tirta Empul is relatively busy, especially if you want to join in the cleansing ritual with the natives in the two large pools of natural ware near the entrance gate. There people queue to cleanse different aspects of their life by standing under water spouting from a sequence of stone sculptures. The ritual is optional and was busy and we opted against it and instead took in the large calm of a temple walk. Prayer was ongoing and we took in some of the ceremony as we strolled, being provided with information by our knowledgeable guide. The temple dates back over 1,000 years and is a truly fascinating place to spend some time and soak in a some Balinese culture. Towards the end we reached a further large pool of spring water, which was bubbling continuously at its base. Evidence that the springs remain active. Well worth a visit...

Mount Kawi

Gunung Kawi is a temple complex centered around royal tombs carved into stone cliffs in the 11th century. It is located amid scenic rice terraces about 30 minutes from Ubud. Note: There are more than 300 steps to climb.

Reviewed By Liefhebber19 - Breda, The Netherlands

We combined The Gunung Kawi and Tirta Empul in one day. Two of the most beautiful templegrounds we have visited on Bali. This 11th century temple complex (one of the oldest on Bali) is thought to be the burial complex of King Anak Wungsu, his wives and favorite concubines. There are shrines (7 meters high) carved out of the rocks. To get to the temple and shrines you need to descend 371 stone steps. Next to the stairs there are lots of nice souvenirshops and on your way you have a beautiful view at the surroundings. This templecomplex is quite large, located in a jungle environment. There are lots of stone walkways and stairs. A unique templecomplex surrounded by beautiful nature. You have to wear a sarong which you can borrow at the entrance. We had our own sarong with us. A must see!
