Located at the southern reaches of the Laurel Ridge, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 20,500 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Highlands. Close to major metropolitan areas and offering vast choices of activities. Passing through the heart of the park, the rushing waters of the Youghiogheny River Gorge are the centerpiece for Ohiopyle. The "Yough" provides some of the best whitewater boating in the eastern United States, as well as spectacular scenery. Other activites are biking the Great Allegheny Passage, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, picnicking, horsebacking riding, rock climbing, and hiking.

Excellent place to rent bikes and take in the beautiful scenery~ the guided white water rafting trips are really fun for a group or a couple! There are hiking trails and places to hang near the water to cool off as well! It’s definitely a yearly fall visit for us!

Prince Gallitzin State Park

A 6,249-acre park surrounds beautiful Glendale Lake, in the heart of the Allegheny region.

SOOOOO many campsites, but they are not on top of each other; plenty of shade and privacy; plenty of wood available. They also sell and deliver 1/2 ($15) and full loads ($30) of split wood. We had about a 200ft walk to the bathhouse, which was clean and well lit at night. There is a very nice trail that goes all around the campground, making it easy to get to the beach. The camp store had just about everything you would need and is open on weekends until 8 PM. We had to buy an air mattress and ice cream. :) You can rent boats for the lake.

Greenwood Furnace State Park

Reviewed By deebug2470 - Pittsburgh, United States

This scenic park isn’t far the Raystown Lake area. That’s how we found it years ago. In the 1830’s the Greenwood furnaces were built due to the demand for iron ore which the area was rich in. The surrounding forest provided the wood needed to make charcoal for the furnace. By the 1880’s a town had sprung up with homes, a company store, stables, blacksmith, and they added a gristmill in 1842. It was built to provide the mill with water. Due to the growing demand for iron they eventually built three more furnaces. As the furnaces and production grew so did the town. They added a church, school, wagon shop and ironmaster’s mansion. Around 330 acres a year of trees were cut and used to make charcoal for the furnaces, this lead to the depletion of the forest. In December 1904 the furnaces closed down. Families moved away and the town became a thing of the past. In 1995 the park was designated a historic landmark. Today it’s a nice park that offers a lake for fishing, beach, picnic areas, camping and hiking trails to see many of the historic spots. In addition to seeing the furnace and it’s remnants you can still see the wagon and blacksmith shop, ironmaster’s mansion, stables, church and the cemetery. The cemetery has two Revolutionary War veterans buried there.

Black Moshannon State Park

Reviewed By JohnnyJ234 - Baltimore, United States

Left early to get there and found we pretty much had the lake to ourselves except one fisherman in a boat. We paddled our two kayaks up the main stem of the lake to explore. We saw all kinds of water lilies at peak bloom white and some pink, yellow coming soon. Saw carnivorous bladderworts, pitcher plants, and sundews. Picked blueberries by kayak along the edge. Breezy showers kept coming through. We ate lunch in the truck, then explored the excellent Bog Trail to see more carnivorous plants and blueberries. The park office had clean restrooms. A very nice park we want to visit again.

Canoe Creek State Park

Reviewed By Alacrout - Los Angeles, United States

This park is a decent size with plenty to do. There’s a lake for swimming and fishing, there’s hiking trails through the wilderness, camping, and activities for kids. It’s a great place for a quick pit stop or for a full day. One of the coolest parts of the park are the limestone kilns. Roughly 100 years old (according to the park ranger who was there when we were), they used to support Pennsylvania’s steel industry. Today, they sit abandoned and decaying, but free for visitors to CAREFULLY explore. It’s a very short and easy hike to get to the kilns, depending on where you park (I recommend looking at a map to scope out the parking lot closest to them).

Bald Eagle State Park

Reviewed By dodiem2021 - Altoona, United States

This was our first visit to the park and our only regret was not going sooner! We opted for a weekend stay at the Nature Inn which is located right inside the park. We hit up multiple trails including the Lakeview Trail on the opposite side of the lake (you have to drive to it). This one was challenging with the snow but the tunnels that went under the train tracks made up for it! We also enjoyed trails closer to the Inn. The Swamp Oak Trail is a must see due to the enormous Swamp Oak tree by the modern campgrounds! We'd love to come back next winter when there’s more snow to experience snowshoeing and sledding! We also hope to be back this summer to enjoy some time on the lake. Definitely make a point to visit this park!!

Oil Creek State Park

We came here out of curiosity about the oil history of the area and sure learned plenty. The park is beautiful with well maintained natural areas and excellent information on exhibits posted around Petroleum Center. The info panels along the trail aren't fancy but their content is interesting as heck. Well done!

Shawnee State Park

We reserved camping cottage #3 for a family camping weekend. The weather was cool and rainy so we were happy to have a cottage to escape the weather! The cottage is simple but adequate. We were told to bring everything you would need as if you were camping in a tent. The cottage has two sets of bunk beds which sleep 5 people. There are two electric heaters which kept the cottage nice and warm. Windows on each wall provided plenty of light during the day. A microwave, table with two chairs and two benches completed the cottage. A garbage can (included one garbage bag) and broom were also in the cottage. We took along two double size blow up mattresses for sleeping. They fit beside each other on the floor and were more comfortable than the provided beds. The bath house/restrooms were a five minute walk up the hill. They were very clean and well taken care of. There are 3 shower stalls and 3 toilets for both men and women. The water in the showers were very cold the weekend we were there. Not much warm (not hot) water between blasts of cold water. Be quick in the shower! A water spigot is conveniently located right in front of the cottage. A good sized front porch also has a picnic table for eating outside and a fire ring also is close by. This is a beautiful campground! It was not crowded or full when we were there and it was very quite. The cottage was at the end of its section so we were very secluded. If you don't want to sleep in a tent or do not have an RV this cottage is a great solution for a camping vacation. Remember to book far in advance as these are reserved early!
