Top 10 Specialty Museums in Northern Norway, Northern Norway

February 5, 2022 Velvet Champine

Home to both the midnight sun (with constant daylight from April to July) and the northern lights, North Norway is a rugged land of steep mountains, deep fjords and scenic coastline, making it a great place for outdoor adventures like dog sledding, snowmobiling and wildlife safaris. It's also the ancient home of the Sami people, 3,000 of whom live (along with 100,000 reindeer) at Kautokeino, Norway's largest municipality at over 3,700 square miles.

The Crofter’s Cottage in Kjelvik

The crofter's cottage in Kjelvik. Kjelvik is situated at the top of a hill below a woody ridge and stands testament to the conditions the Nothern Norwegian crofters of Sami decent lived by. Time has more or less stood still here since the last occupant passed away in 1967. Here you can experience an authentic croft through the original tools, furnishings and clothes found in the old buildings. Get hold of the rake handle. Go in the smithy and pick up the blacksmith’s tongs. Go into the small rooms and try to imagine how they managed without running water and electricity. The last occupants were four unmarried siblings. Edvard, Karen, Hans and Anna lived together and worked the farm. They had four cows, sheep, a couple of goats and a horse. They each specialised in different craftwork. From the smallholding there is a 2km long path down to the fjord. This was the old access route from the sea and, prior to the building of the E6, was the only way in to Kjelvik. This area was once a Sami settlement. It started with reindeer herding and then moved on to fishing and farming. We know that people lived here from 1747. The buildings consist of a cottage,a cowshed/barn, a wood-hall, “Patihuset”(a “cookhouse” and smithy), “sjeltersjåg”(shed), a cellar and a mill.Kjelvik is one of 22 nationally selected "Special Cultural Landscapes" because of it's rich variety of plant life and the traditional farming techniques used on the site.Lefse, waffles and other traditional foods are sold at the croft.Coffee is included in the ticket. How do I get there?Follow the E6 56km north of Fauske and 4km south of Kobbelv jnn. From the lay-by there is a good path to the homestead. We visited the Artic Circle Motorcycle Museum in October. Our good friend Ivar organised the visit as he is a old school friend of Benny. From the minute we arrived it was wide eyes and smiles all round. There was something for everyone, I went for the motorcycles but was amazed by the ww2 displays, Benny has so much knowledge about local involvement during the war and his stories are fascinating and some times unbelievable. The motorcycles were pristine and he had all the restoration stories, some had a bit of a chequered and sad history, without saying too much. It’s was easy to become engrossed in the displays, stories, feelings and atmosphere. It isn’t a huge museum but it packs a lot of punch. Thanks again Benny from Kenny Barbara and Mattia ???????????????????????????????????????????? I’m sure we will meet again ????????????

Gammelbutikken in Skrolsvik

Gammelbutikken (The old store) was built sometime in the 1870’s as a general store with all types of goods like food, equipment, clothes, fishing gear and whatever else that was needed in a fishing village on Senja. In addition to being a general store it also functioned as office for the local fish landing factory and shipping agent. The second floor was used as accommodation for fishermen seeking shelter and somewhere to sleep. Super-interesting exhibits on Kirkenes's ordeal during WW2. One of the world's few Shturmovik Soviet ground attack planes in perfect condition. Also exhibits on the local mining industry and a wonderful photo exhibit by a local woman in the early 20th Century. Worth at least two hours here.

When researching Alta, I heard of the Tirpitz Museum and was particularly keen to visit it as my father had been on the Arctic Convoy during the war. Although normally closed during the winter months, I managed to arrange for them to open for me and I am so glad that they did. Although the museum is quite small, the number of artefacts they have on display is amazing ranging from uniforms to musical instruments and even a typewriter salvaged from the wreck. If you are in the area and have an interest in WW2 history, do try to visit the museum. Highly recommended.

I passed through Alta on my way to the Nordkapp. This is one of the few UNESCO world heritage sites in Norway and absolutely not to be missed. Take an hour or two and walk down the path from the museum towards the more than 5000 years old stone carvings -- the artistry is really astonishing - and there are lots of carvings ... lots , and lots ! Spend a few quid extra for the Audio guide the audio descriptions are phenomenal and make for the best experience.

Hamsunsenteret

The Knut Hamsun Centre is located by the vicarage ruins on the banks of the Glimma River in Presteid in Hamarøy Municipality in Northern Norway. The centre is situated in a beautiful cultural landscape surrounded by nature that remains virtually as untouched as it was in Hamsun’s time. The centre’s tower offers an impressive view over the realm of Hamsun, the area that inspired the author to write world renowned books like Pan, Growth of the Soil and Wayfarers.
