Lausanne was once an intellectual capital, attracting great thinkers such as Rousseau and Voltaire. Today it is a haven for those who love water skiing, swimming and sailing. The International Olympic Committee is even headquartered here. The town's history is evident, though, in its medieval cathedral, the museums of the Palais de Rumine, and Ouchy, the port where Lord Byron wrote "The Prisoner of Chillon" and the Treaty of Lausanne was ratified. For great views, hike up to the Signal de Sauvabelin.

This is an excellent gallery and worth the visit for the building alone. The permanent collection is excellent and the exhibitions are very well curated. At the moment they are hosting their exhibition on Sculpture Rodin to Bourgeoise and it is outstanding. Whoever put this together deserves a prize.

Since its opening in 2000, the mudac, Museum of Contemporary Design and Applied Arts, has built up a reputation for having an inquisitive and incisive attitude to the things that shape our way of life, and has always sought to ask pertinent - and sometimes impertinent! - questions. Its programme of between five and eight exhibitions a year alternates thematic projects with "carte blanche" events for designers from Switzerland and further afield. It presents renowned designers such as Zep or Stefan Sagmeister as well as young creators. From plastic bags to Playmobil and from flippers to fruit wrappers, from camouflage to pop-up, from fashion to graphic design and from industrial design to jewellery, the mudac welcomes every challenge. The mudac prides itself on providing a forum for dialogue and exchange, bringing together design with the applied arts and contemporary art. This unique and bold approach is recognised throughout the world, with exhibitions staged from Paris to Seoul. Check out the current exhibitions on our website !
We visited this Museum with my teenage son and daughter who are both studying careers related to design. The museum is small, but very complete. There was an exhibition about arms (guns) and how they affect our daily life, which caused great impact on us. We certainly are glad we stumbled upon this museum.

Great museum to better understand the development of Lausanne. Quite surprised at the horrible public health issues in the late 1800’s. Very helpful staff. Some signage explaining the transition from the new building to the old bishop’s residence and one time jail would be helpful. Excellent city model highlighting the history and accompanying films.

Impressive animals are waiting for you, as the tiger or the big white shark. Our white shark is the biggest naturalized with shark of the world. The compared anatomy room was dedicated to the medicine students until the years 1930. Now, visitors can appreciate skeletons, so-called "monsters" and a large collection of insects. We are also proposing temporary exhibitions about once a year. These last years, they spoke about shells, photography, taxidermy, sex and reproduction or aquatic insects.
