Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

Fuku Bonsai Cultural Center

The modest Fuku-Bonsai Cultural Center is co-sponsored by Fuku-Bonsai Inc. ( a working bonsai nursery who acts like a "B-Corp" and invites visitors who enjoy talking with our staff) and the 501(3)(c) Mid-Pacific Bonsai Foundation (whose volunteers assist with maintaining the collections and grounds and participate in the educational activities). The varied collection include extensive educational exhibits. The sales area allows selection of certified True Indoor Bonsai(tm) to be shipped to all parts of the US. Beginner, intermediate, or advanced workshops are often cited as the "high-lights" of a Hawaiian vacation and while we do not do any amount of advertising, most of our sales and visitors are repeat or by word of mouth as Fuku-Bonsai began in 1972 and have published over 100 articles in national and international bonsai magazines. Come discover the beauty of bonsai, the serenity of nature, and the Spirit of Hawaii!

Lyman Museum

The Smithsonian-affiliated Lyman Museum tells the story of Hawaii’s islands and people through its exhibits on Hawaii’s volcanic origins, flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world, Hawaiian culture, and other ethnic groups that have shaped the unique society of Hawaii today. Admire worldwide collections of sea shells and minerals. Learn about 19th century missionary life on a tour of the historic Lyman Mission House, the Island’s oldest wood frame building constructed in 1839.

Great museum and old missionary house. Worth the effort to call and make a reservation for a tour. House has furniture and gives an idea of how people lived. Nice history of how people came to HI as missionaries. Not an easy life! Great view of life in HI as a crusty salty New England woman with a husband and a few kids. Interesting tables and furniture and beautiful wood wood floors. Worth the price. Great stuff to see in the museum. Birds and fish and sea shells and how volcanoes build an island. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They are careful about hand washing and wearing masks. With Corona on the rampage, they were able to tell me what was open and what was closed. That info alone was worth the cost of an admission. And a cool gift shop.
