I could write this review in Spanish, but I wanted to give provide an English review since this restusrant doesn't have any. Staying outside of Deba, we went into town to look for somewhere to eat. We walked the entire (very small) downtown area and found few choices with little of gastronomic interest. We finally settled on Calbetón. We decided to eat in the restaurant area (comedor) which is in a separate room beyond the bar and kitchen. It was small, initimate, and beautifully decorated. As it was a Tuesday evening, we had the place all to ourselves for most of our meal. I ordered hake (similar to cod) covered with tiny squid & mushrooms in a light butter sauce @ 16⬠-- outstanding! My husband had a sirloin steak served with a delicious reduction sauce & grilled peppers @ 15â¬. We each had a glass of a local Crianza wine. To finish off our meal, my husband had espresso & I had flan served with strawberry gelato. The total with tax was â¬48 -- very reasonable for such a quality meal served by a gracious host in an inviting atmosphere.

During hiking in the mountains and walking on the Camino we passed this restaurant. Back in Mutriku another waiter recommended this restaurant. What a treat! Very relaxed and friendly service. The waiter who is the owner together with his wife, who is the chef, we were served with an attitude that it takes time to serve each table. Donât expect very rapid service! The food was very well prepared. Exactly cooked to perfection. We wanted the âturbotâ, but the couple that arrived before us had ordered the last. Instead we got âlangustoâ and âbacalaoâ. For appetizer we shared a mixed salat. The best was the cheese cake, Spanish style which is baked. Also this was cooked just perfect. This restaurant is highly recommended.

Would have given zero stars if I could. Were there in July 2018 at 7:30 pm at the height of the tourist season: 60% of the fish on the a la carte menu was not available, had octopus that was decent, but twice as expensive as the same dish of the same quality in this region. My wife had fixed menu (which the chef did not offer, we had to ask for it additionally): 3 out of 4 fish choices were not available. Tuna in the salad was about school cafeteria quality, the worst salad of that kind that we ever had, and we had tens of those in the North of Spain. The only available fish was named dorada in the menu, but had nothing to do with actual dorada which is a tasty fish, instead it was a thick God know which species filet that was previously frozen and tasted like cardboard. No amount of friendliness from the chef can compensate for bad food, unfortunately.

A bit of a trek to get to the restaurant but well worth it. Limited English spoken, but the staff made a huge effort to ensure we ordered what we wanted.Local cured ham that melted in your mouth, amazing croquettes, langoustine and calamari, superb local fish cooked in olive and garlic & salad & great local wine.Simple, homemade food, great quality. Highly recommended. â¬150 for four people.

After reading other reviews we decided to drop in for a bite to eat. Drinks on the patio overlooking the town square as great. Watching the locals socialise and kids play was just lovely. The food was good, tasty and super cheap. The owners obviously have a great business as many locals eat and socialise there. Really enjoyed our meal there and dropped by the next day just for drinks. Just remember that Spanish folk eat late and therefore the kitchen will not open until quite late.

Friendly servers, but the food we had was not great. The fish soup is OK for the price, but the mixed salad was tasteless. Just tasteless lettuce, onion and tomatoes with oil and too much vinegar. The mussels were absolutely without any flavour except garlic and too much salt. The prices for grilled fish are the highest we have seen in 2 1/2 months if traveling. They looked good on the grill but st those prices it should be stupendous. But the location is very nice.

Our family was traveling from San Sebastián to Bilbao and stopped in Ondarroa hoping to find lunch. Although Surtagi is not that impressive from the street, the upstairs dining room is lovely. The waiter was friendly and very knowledgeable, and the meal of fresh seafood was Superb.
