Things to do in La Jonquera
Each time we visit this shopping centre we stop here for a coffee and croissant. Lovely coffee and very nice croissants too. Staff are very friendly and prices very reasonable.

No one comes to Can Santos by chance. It's entirely unobtrusive and obviously caters to people who have been coming here for years. They have no website, and I don't think they'll ever have one. When I put "Can Santos" into my GPS, it showed me an entirely different location. You've got to enter the full street address, and then it's straightforward. In reality, if you're coming from the south, Can Santos is within 2 minutes or less of the single La Jonquera highway exit; if you're coming from the north, there are two exits for La Jonquera, and you have to take the one for La Jonquera South, which is adjacent to the toll plaza. Anyhow, once you've found the place, you discover that it's very old-fashioned and homey. The owners are really charming, with a warm welcome. La Jonquera being a border town, almost everyone speaks three languages: Spanish, Catalan, and French. We speak French, so I don't know if the owners speak English. But there is an English menu. No one bothers with the menu anyway, and I haven't studied it, though I suspect that a vegetarian could find something. In reality, nearly everyone takes the 25-euro menu fixe, which is an unbelievable deal. Four courses plus coffee. First course: a large slice of pan tomate, a generous platter of mixed cold cuts, and a salad. Second course: a truly enormous platter of shellfish, half mussels, the other half a mix of squid, clams, shrimp, and crayfish. Third course: an equally enormous platter of lightly fried fish of various sorts. Fourth course: a choice of simple desserts, like crema catalana. Coffee is included; drinks of all sorts are on offer, at reasonable prices. The fish is of the utmost freshness, and it's prepared to order, within customers' sight. Reservations are a good idea, especially in the evening. Again, since La Jonquera is a border town, Can Santos does both French and Spanish hours. So you can have lunch as early as 12noon or as late as 3pm, dinner as early as 7pm or as late as 10pm, perhaps even later. Wonderful place, not fancy, true authenticity.

Came here with my parents, my husband and my 3 children, we arrived in the shopping mall around 1pm and there was a VERY long queue. We queued for around 30 minutes and were then shown to our table. The 7 of us were squished round a table for 4, we were not offered high chairs and we had to go and find our own extra seats. The variety of food is good, but most of the 'hot' food was luke warm at best, some of it wasn't the best quality, the drinks machine ran out of fresh orange and the soda machine ran out of everything. There is no tea, no tea bags or hot water just coffee or hot chocolate. And the coffee machine ran out of milk.None of the food was labelled so we had no idea what we were choosing. The desserts and cheeses were really nice, I'd definitely eat those again. We had driven from France and to be honest we were a bit disappointed.

A short walk from Cantallops - very quiet when we visited. Food was good and varied - husband's steak was a bit too smothered in sauce though. If staying in Cantallops this restaurant is worth a visit- the owner is very hospitable and friendly. Digestif on the house at end of meal.

Food quality is very bad ! The food is taste less. Will never come back. The waiter was rude when we asked for a glass of sangria. Hello! I am very sorry for your comment. We appologize if the waiter was rude with you as you said. It will be very helpful if you can tell us more information, in order to improve and get better. We always cook with the traditional receipts and trying to give the best service. Do not hesitate to contact us to know more about the service. Thank you very much, sorry again and kind regards.

A real authentic Spanish restaurant with delicious food for a great price. We normally stop by during our trip from Holand to Spain. It is close to several gas stations (first ones in Spain after crossing the border). It can be crowded.

We visited the bar/tapas half of this establishment after a pleasant shopping expedition, and unfortunately it put rather a bad spin on our evening. Initially, the food was pleasant and plentiful, with decent portions and a particularly tasty gazpacho. Unfortunately when the bill came, they had overcharged us a little. I queried it but as the bill was vague I had to ask the barman to go through it item by item. It turned out they had simply added a euro to a couple of items and charged us twice for another. When I pointed this out and put the correct money down for what we had consumed, the barman inexplicably flew into an almighty rage, shouting at me and stealing my female companion's iphone and credit cards (which she had casually placed upon the bar) whilst demanding we paid the extra. He intimated he might call the police, at which point I wholeheartedly agreed and set about doing so myself. It was then that he took the stolen iphone to the door and threatened to fling it far and wide. Bear in mind this was over a couple of euros... As it became clear I was in fact seeking professional assistance he fairly swiftly relented and returned the stolen goods. We left, but my friend was extremely shaken and frightened by the whole affair. I really would not recommend going to this bar/restaurant. There are a few nice local places I've been to just up and down the street where they don't overcharge you or shout at you. Give this place a huge miss and have a pleasant evening.

We've been going here on a reasonably regular basis for some years now. When we first started going it was one of the most consistent restaurants and an oasis among the cheap and cheerful places that litter La Jonquera. Unfortunately, on recent visits we've noted that, whilst still pretty good by LJ standards, the quality of food, service and overall satisfaction has definitely started to slip. The latest visit was a case in point. Despite them only having a grand total of 16 covers that evening, we had to wait 20 minutes to place our order, then a further 40 for the starters to be served, despite the fact that one of them was a salad, and the other smoked salmon. The wait was not quite as bad for the main, but it had clearly been left lying around, as my wife's cod was stone cold by the time it arrived. Service was both rather mechanical, and totally unfriendly and unsmiling....something we've noticed a few times at Els Fogons recently. It was as if the waiting staff were doing the bare minimum, and doing us a favour by serving us. There is nothing inherently wrong with the food here, but if that was representative of a fairly quiet November evening, I shudder to think what it's like at busy times these days. So my advice would be that they should smarten up their act a few notches, and, for goodness sake try to make their customers feel welcome and valued, as opposed to a burden.!
