It is an hour by plane from Lima, in the high jungle plateau to the east of what is known as the selva baja (low jungle). Although Moyobamba is the capital of the region, Tarapoto is the region's largest city and is linked to the Upper Amazon and the historic city of Yurimaguas by a relatively well-maintained transandean highway, paved in 2008-9.

I love the burgers here, best in town! Not only good beef with all the trimmings, but chicken as well. Flavors similar to USA, but with a local fusion that is definitely better than both! For local/jungle food, try the Tacacho, which is a mass of deep fried plantains and spices, I think it comes with chicken on skewers. about 10 soles for burger, fries, and drink.

It is quite trendy now to have 'ceviche', this nikkei-peruvian dish. Traditional peruvian ceviche was fish meat 'cooked' for hours with strongly acidic local lemon juice. The japanese influence turned this old fishermen´s recipe into a delicacy by using only the best ingredients, keep everything simple and cook for only minutes leaving the fish almost as in sashimi (raw). Try the traditional versions, normally contemporary 'fusion' recipes don´t deliver the best of the idea of ceviche.

Probably best seafood and ceviche in Tarapoto. ALL FRESH guaranteed. THey also have fish from the Pacific ocean brought daily. Lets consider this is a major task since it takes about 20 hours driving from there. But I had Paiche fish which is an excellent choice for tasting local amazonian fish. The ceviche was exquisite and service was very good

Amazing find! Food was delicious and staff was knowledgeable and friendly. Cocktails were inventive and tasty. Quality level on par with some of the best restaurants of Peru! Vegan and veggie friendly. Made a believer of vegan meat of our carnivores in the group. Portion sizes for the 5 course tasting menu were great for the women in our group, a bit small for some of the men, but overall well worth the cost (frankly, double the price would still have been well worth the cost).

I went here on a solo visit while in Tarapoto I arrived at opening time so was first in, even though I was the only one it still had a nice atmosphere I really like the decoration of the place it is very chilled out. I had the veggie burger and fries which was really nice in a nice brown bread roll and nice and moist and full of flavour I also had an amazing salad which had the most interesting and tasty seasoning, highly suggest you try this. I managed to get to chat with the owners who also are the chefs and this is when a nice meal turned into a 5 star rating. The idea behind the restaurant is to fund an NGO to promote sustainable ecologicaly friendly agriculture and educate children and families in poverty in how to achieve the same (I probably have not done this justice). Anyone visiting Tarapoto should put this on their list not only to eat great and healthy food but to help the owners help the community. They also hold lovely meditation classes some mornings and some evenings.A very nice message, thanks a lot. It is very difficult to have better chinese-peruvian food than the chifa of Lima, the capital (chifa is how peruvians call the chinese food and chinese food restaurants addapted to the limitations of local peruvian ingredients and few brought by chinese workers on the 19th century) But this is a nice surprise, few chifas out of lima have good food and this is one of them.

though this is not mainly an eatery or restaurant , it really offers a nice variety of appetizers, sandwiches and snacks to order and also good drinks. Moreover this place is really a local contemporary historic spot, its owner worked for years in the busy now gentrified Barranco area in Lima and from there he brought years ago the know-how of how to run a place where rock, drinks and fun meet daily. There are always live bands programmed for playing, drinks are generous and service fast (something some other places lack)
