Reviews on South American food in Placencia, Stann Creek, Belize. Once a sleepy fishing village, Placencia has emerged as an increasingly popular eco-destination on the Caribbean. For those who enjoy outdoor adventure, the Stann Creek region offers a host of activities: hiking through mountainous rain forests, kayaking, deep sea fishing, diving and exploring Mayan ruins. The peninsula boasts 16 miles of tranquil beaches, with a lagoon to the west and the Caribbean to the east and lots of peace and quiet in the middle. Tour guides and dive centers offer a variety of excursions, with boat rides to the outer cayes an ongoing favorite. Also popular are guided land tours to Mayan Ruins or trekking the jungle trails of Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, where the first Jaguar Reserve in the world was established.

We were a party of seven - booked about a week before we went. Clean restaurant with a/c and a welcoming staff of two. Those were the highlights. Main courses came two hours after being ordered and as they had obviously been prepared one dish at a time and kept under heat lamps until the last dish was ready ......... well the only dish that was palatable was the last one cooked. Except it was already overcooked and the sauce was missing. A Roast corn salad appetizer with no corn was another standout. It was a shockingly bad experience. Four meals returned - we ate ours because having arrived hungry we just had to eat something. Incredibly when I went the next day to bring it to the owner's attention - the restaurant apparently being part of the Brisa Oceano complex, no apology was offered and the explanation given was that the chef was not there that night so the kitchen was being run by the lunch time crew. Well scratch The Vineyard off for lunch then. Whomever I spoke with did express surprise however as "all meals were portioned and ready to be cooked and served". The two charming and gracious staff that attended us need to be snapped up by another establishment post haste.

Food is great and they have good options for all needs (including vegans). Drinks are great. Ask for Ovidio. He makes marvelous drinks. The ambient is very nice and the staff is great. The only down side is the mosquitoes in the evening. Be prepared with repellent.

The Naïa is nestled back in the Cocoplum Resort & Spa compound off Mile 17.5 along the road into Placencia. I was told that Naïa means Strong Woman, but Internet sources indicate a Basque name meaning flowing or water nymph. I like Strong Woman better! The setting is spacious. My hostess had shrimp & pineapple that she loved. The Naïa is nestled back in the Cocoplum Resort & Spa compound off Mile 17.5 along the road into Placencia. My hostess had shrimp & pineapple that she loved. I had fish in a banana leaf with rice & beans, that were rolled, and I think, quickly fried as the two small pieces were like large Tootsie Rolls. ($28, each). We shared a gelato and lime pie. Delightful! It was a wonderful ending to my week of editing in this restful, lovely seaside spot on the peninsula.

Several miles out of Placencia village, this is not worth the trip. The Mexican food was poor to just lousy, the service is extremely slow both for the bar and the food, and because it's located on a calm lagoon we were eaten alive while we ate. Don't bother.

I've written an extensive review of the restaurant as part of a review of Belize Ocean Club. Suffice to say that the location is very nice but the service was dreadful and the food average and served cold. Rather than deal with our complaints appropriately the staff were hostile when we complained. It's overpriced and the pricing is very opaque. Some menus are listed in US Dollars and some in Belize Dollars. When we asked a waitress which was which she inaccurately told us all prices were in Belize dollars.

We had high hopes, because the restaurant has a beautiful refined ambience. But the food wasn't great, and the cocktails were disappointing. Also, the waiters were overwhelmed, causing slow service. I will say that we were there Christmas day, so our experience may not have been the norm. Dear MAFlyer,Our sincere apologies that your experience was not what it should have been. Indeed as it was the holidays, our team, as prepared as we believed ourselves to be, found ourselves being overwhelmed with the rush of diners without reservations. We do invite you to give us another try to truly experience our 1981 restaurant and her Belizean inspired flavors should you be in our area again! With Kindest regards,PamelaGuest Services Manager1981/Naia Resort

We spent a couple of days on our sailboat on a mooring off of Hideaway Caye. What a delightful place, and what friendly people! We could be found sitting under the palm thatch every afternoon enjoying drinks and conversation while our kids played with their daughter. We will most certainly be back when we return to Belize later this year!Thank you for the review Tanya. See you again.
