The province of Taranto (Italian: provincia di Taranto), previously known as the province of the Ionian, is a province in the Apulia region of Italy. Its capital is the city of Taranto. It has an area of 2,437 square kilometres (941 sq mi), and a total population of 578,465 (2001). There are 29 comuni (singular: comune) in the province, all of which are listed at comunes of the Province of Taranto. The coat of arms of the province contains a scorpion, which Pyrrhus is thought to have seen when looking down at Taranto.

Have you already seen the Archaeological Museum of Naples and think you have seen everything? Nothing more wrong. The archaeological museum MarTa of Taranto will amaze you and leave you breathless by the beauty of the precious artifacts displayed in a large exhibition dedicated to the Apulian Greece-Roman artefacts arranged according to the type of materials: marble sculptures, monumental tombs, soft stone sculptures , pottery of the necropolis, goldsmiths. The guided tour will take you to visit the rooms dedicated to marble sculptures, another room with sculptures, mosaics and epigraphs from public and private buildings. Following will visit the rooms dedicated to the pottery from the necropolis. The diamond point of the museum are the so-called Ori of Taranto (Golds of Taranto) which, in reality, are almost all of Canosa di Puglia town. The tour ends with a visit to the mosaics of the baths and villas of the Roman patricians, terracotta tools and the numismatic collection.

The guided tour starts from Piazza Castello square, the center of the major monuments of interest. Here we will visit the ruins of the Doric Temple of Poseidon dating back to the 6th century. B.C. with two Doric columns that bear witness to the ancient Magno-Greek temple. The tour continues with the visit of the Aragonese castle inside which there is the Navy: the first tower was built by the Byzantines in the eleventh century and over the centuries was expanded to the current conformation. The tour concludes with a visit to the Cathedral of San Cataldo, built by the Byzantines in the second half of the tenth century, although remodeled with a Baroque façade in the mid-1700s.
