We did the gorilla trekking (which takes 1 day) and spent two more days at Lake Bunyonyi and at Lake Mburo. We recently undertook a 13 day safari tour of Uganda which included a gorilla trek, a chimp habituation experience, tracking lions and leopards and walking with a guide to track rhinos. Kassim was our guide and he was determined to ensure that we achieved our bucket list of things to see and do. We saw a multitude of animals including some tree climbing lions which he spotted well in advance of us even realising they were there. Kassim was an excellent guide and we enjoyed his company. He was courteous, punctual and very careful with guest safety being paramount. The paperwork was all in order and our holiday went ever so smoothly. Talking to Kassim was like talking to a friend as he shared his knowledge about Uganda and spoke about his family including what life was like growing up in a village in Uganda. He had a great sense of humour once you got to know him. We were particularly touched by his generous nature. He bought fruit for us to eat along the way and, on occasions, would stop and share this fruit with children. We have wonderful memories as Kassim went out of his way to make this a very special holiday.

Kibale forest National Park is situated in western Uganda, in the districts of Kamwenge and Kabarole about 5-6 hours’ drive from Entebbe International airport. This lowland tropical rain forest is considered to be one of the few pristine rain forests remaining on the African continent. Kibale National Park has the largest chimpanzee population standing at approximately 1500 individuals and is the best place to trek habituated wild chimpanzees in the whole of Africa. You can enjoy a half day chimpanzee trekking either in the morning or the afternoon or decide to do a whole day chimpanzee habituation experience. Kibale has three habituated communities that can be trekked but in order to reduce on food competition, these communities that are composed of 50-150 individuals tend to break up into smaller parties of 10-20 individuals. They will only rejoin in the evening to make their nest. For those interested in birding, Kibale is one of the few places where you can spot over 350 birds.

GORILLA TREKKING Mountain gorillas are believed to be descendants of ancestral monkeys and apes found in Africa and Arabia during the start of the Oligocene epoch that’s 34-24 million years ago. The fossil record provides evidence of the hominoid primates (apes) found in east Africa about 22–32 million years ago. The fossil record of the area where mountain gorillas live is particularly poor and so its evolutionary history is not clear. CHIMPANZEE TRACKING The Kibale forest has three habituated communities of chimpanzees and two of these are used for chimpanzee trekking while the other one is for chimpanzee habituation.
