Top 10 Sightseeing Tours in Kapolei, Hawaii (HI)

February 19, 2022 Fernanda Pittenger

Kapolei, named for the volcanic cone Pu'u o Kapolei (loosely meaning "hill of beloved Kapo"), is locally known as Oahu's "second city" after Honolulu. Built on former sugarcane and pineapple plantations, Kapolei is an affluent and vibrant city that is growing rapidly. It has an ever-changing urban scene as well as the Ko Olina resort and marina community and the Disney Aulani Resort. Sportsmen can play a round of golf at the Ko Olina Golf Club before a sophisticated evening on the town.

As someone with a major fear of heights, I was the last person in the world who would willingly get on a helicopter. However, I wanted to experience the beauty of Oahu in a way most couldn’t...in the air, hovering in a helicopter. So, before I flew, I shared my fear of heights with Paradise Helicopters, and indicated that I wanted to be away from the window. So they snuggly placed me in the middle of the back seat between two other passengers. This was a nice sized 7-seater helicopter, and it was quite cozy. Our incredible US veteran pilot, Jay Moorman, gave us reassurance that he had everything absolutely under control, and we had excellent flight conditions, as it was 7:45am, clear and sunny conditions, with a light breeze. Our pilot Jay over exceeded my expectations, as he took us to some incredible places normally not seen by most visitors, including green mountain vistas of the Central Valley, as well as a flyover at the USS Arizona Memorial. I put full trust in my pilot Jay, and the flight helped me overcome a fear, while enhancing my entire Hawaiian experience.

My wife and I have enjoyed diving all around the world for many years. We’ve been to Honduras, Belize, The Bahamas, Grand Cayman, Florida keys, The Mediterranean, The Yucatán, Los Cabos, California, and all over Hawai’i. We have always chartered trips with professional dive operations and we have had wonderful experiences, but I have to say that our time with Trident Adventures was by far the best we’ve ever had. They went above and beyond anything we’ve ever experienced to show us a great time, give us unmatched service, and leave us with memories we will cherish for a lifetime. I was so impressed with their professional operation. It was wonderful to see how smoothly they all worked together. The crew’s respect for each other and their leader, Steve, was obvious. Steve’s excellent leadership as a former Navy Seal was incredible. Every member of the crew worked with passion and pride, striving for excellence to give us an unforgettably joyous experience. The service was unlike anything I’ve seen on a dive boat. They provided state of the art/ top of the line equipment, a variety of refreshing beverages, snacks, fresh fruit, fresh water showers, hot towels, jackets to warm us between dives and even argon oil for our hair after our dives. The water scooters they provided were a blast! They allowed us to see 10X more than I’ve ever seen on a 2 tank dive. We flew effortlessly through the magical underwater world. It was so much fun and it was a true adventure! We saw 3 shipwrecks, huge turtles, spinner dolphins, octopus, eagle rays, eels, beautiful coral, fun swim-throughs, and a wide variety of colorful fish. They split us up into small groups, each with our own leader, as to make the experience more individualized and not crowded. It was amazing! Steve, the owner of Trident Adventures, fought as a Navy Seal for our liberty and freedom. Because of him and other veterans like him, we are free to enjoy amazing experiences with our families and loved ones in this beautiful land. His business represents what’s great about America. Thank you for your service, Steve, and thank you for giving us one of the best vacation adventures we’ve ever had!

From late December through early May, thousands of humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Hawaii. Catch a glimpse of the magnificent mammals on a whale-watching excursion from Waikiki. Venture out on the water with a small group of people to witness the humpback whales breach, play or feed around you. Your guide guarantees sightings, and in the rare event that you don’t see any supersize stars, you get to do the tour again for free!

This excursion was okay at best. Though we were able to see dolphins, which was lovely, the snorkeling was blah. First the company took us south along the island, versus out into the ocean, and guided us snorkeling right by a power plant on the shoreline. There were some pretty fish, maybe 3-4 different species. The coral was not colorful; they informed us that is typical for Hawaii. Friends we have that live on the islands state there are beautiful coral reefs, you just need to know where to find them. Apparently, this company does not know where to find these reefs. The catamaran ride was just lovely, but that's it. Again, nothing special. The crew were fine when talking to us as a group but not one-on-one. Then they seemed guarded and annoyed. I would not recommend this excursion.
