I first visited this temple in 1986 as I was staying nearby. I always return to this place - there's just something about it. It's not the oldest or most impressive temple in Japan - but it has a great location tucked away in the Yata hills at the top of a long set of stone steps and commands a lovely view across the Nara plane. I was fortunate enough to ring the bell here on New Year's Eve. It's far enough off the beaten track not to attract regular tourists, so if you're looking for your little corner of traditional Japan this could be it. The hydrangeas are indeed beautiful but it's invariably crowded. Personally I prefer visitng when it's much quieter and more peaceful.
