Beautiful temple standing in the middle of a tank. This shrine must be visited for it's spiritual significance. This is the place where Lord Mahavira attained nirvana in 527 BCE. The place where the Lord was cremated was so sacred to his devotees that thousands of them took away the soil from the site, eventually creating a tank where the temple was constructed.

The ruins which were restored by the Archiological society of India in the 1950's depicts our glorious past dating back to the 5th century AD. The artifacts excavated are stored in the Nalanda museum which is opposite the ruins. The university is said to have had 10,000 students and 2,000 teachers. Only a part of the ruins have been escalated. Felt great to be at a place which is so much a part of the history and culture of India.

Very beautiful place. Set in a large ground with nice walkway and green lawn, the memorial is a classic Chinese styled building. The memorial hall provides plenty of information about Xuan Zang's travel to India and his life. Very impressive place. Well worth a visit when in Nalanda.
