Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

Holographic Studios is the world's oldest gallery of 3D holography. The gallery is open free to the public on weekday afternoons. We also offer classes, gifts, and custom hologram portraits. See our website for detail on our guided tours of our gallery and subterranean mad scientist laser laboratory.
Dr. Laser is a hell of a host! You'll get to see all sorts of holographic art and the awesome techniques used to make it. This is a really interesting and specific field of "photography" and makes for an amazingly unique place to visit.

How excited to see the many litarary quotes on the way to the main library; Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. As we were heading to the library I noticed the bronze plaques imbedded in the sidewalk. I stopped to read the quotes. Each one is from a famous book. Fortunately the quotes are attributed so no guess work involved. What a delightful experience. Approach the library from the east, walk along 41 St. you will see the series of plaques. According to the library web site -- Library Walk: A celebration of the world’s great literature, brought to you by the Grand Central Partnership and the New York Public Library. Sculptor: Gregg LeFevre. 1998. Al the quotes can be found on the library web page.

This magnificent church is located on 2nd Avenue and 34th Street, in an area that used to be called Little Armenia, due to its large population of Armenians. The Cathedral of Surp Vartan is huge and austere, as Armenian churches are, with thick tall walls and the typical Armenian cross on the top of dome. It resembles a very old Armenian Church, the Cathedral of Surp Hripsime, located in Vargharshapat, Armenia. This cathedral is dedicated to Saint Vartan (Surp means Saint in Armenian). Vartan Mamikonian was the military leader who fought with the Armenian Army in the Battle of Avarayr, in the 5th century. The interior of the church is illuminated with several large chandeliers and decorated with colorful stained glass windows. The Blessed Virgin Mary with Baby Jesus in her arms presides over the altar. Many traditional Christian and Armenian scenes are depicted in the inside and the outside of the church, and it is very interesting to examine them and understand the meaning of each image. I was lucky that I visited this incredible temple on January 6, the date in which Armenians all over the world celebrate Christmas. The church was crowded, the ancient Armenian prayers and songs filled the place and added to the wonderful atmosphere.

Irwin Chanin was born to a constructor father and a housewife mother, both natives of Poltava, Ukraina. Raised in poverty and deprivation, he had the drive to achieve and to make it to the top. And he did: he built this high rise in the heart of Manhattan as a high-steel construction, employing thousands of workers and overseeing a project that requires exquisite timing: it was a highly congested area and contractors were forbidden from storing anything on the sidewalks: all steel, concrete, wood, fixtures, needed to be installed immediately upon delivery. The building was completed about a year before the Depression hit and immediately rented out, with demand exceeding supply. While restrained on the outside, the inside of the building is profoundly ornate. It's one of the outstanding examples of Art Deco in Manhattan. The lobby depicts the story of New York as heaven for venturous immigrants. The bronze panels symbolize Courage, Effort, Determination and Vision. To learn more about it, I cannot recommend highly enough Donald L. Miller's “Supreme City”. Sadly, photography is not allowed in the lobby, unlike the gorgeous Fred French Building (separate review).
