Getting sick on vacation is a major drag, but if you have to be under the weather, Montpellier is an ideal place to do it. People have studied medicine here for centuries—the Moors established medical schools in the 9th century, and the Université Montpellier’s school of medicine was founded in 1220. Once the local docs give you a clean bill of health, explore the cathedral, mansions and opera house.

Place Saint-Roch

This little plaza bustles with activity. Several narrow walking streets stretch into the historic district. Walk as many of these streets as you can. This area was my wife's favorite stop of a 4 week trip in Europe. Shops with displays of clothes, postcards, dry goods, novelties and souvenirs in the narrow corridors, banners overhead, open windows above decorated with planters and the occasional laundry, cafes, and a church. The historical area is much larger than I expected for this size city. Just roam around, get lost, take in the atmosphere.
