Once a mere pineapple patch, the red-dirt island of Lanai is an oasis of calm. Reaching the island is difficult - no direct flights from the mainland - but once you arrive, the tropical surroundings are the ideal backdrop for snorkeling and scuba diving, swimming in Hulopoe Bay (a marine preserve), whale watching, horseback riding, golfing, hiking, four-wheeling and exploring the red spires of the Garden of the Gods. The 1920s-era town is small but quaint, and the locals go out of their way to be friendly.

Waiting in the covered pavillion with lots of seating sure beats standing in the sun on the Lahaina dock. There are restrooms and a general store but unfortunately it was closed due to the virus.

Garden of the Gods can be found driving off paved roads past the Stables and a Preserve. It is surrounded by Rock formations caused by years of erosion.
Go to Lanai. Rent a Jeep 4or. Go to the Garden of the Gods. The juxtaposition of the red soil and the amazing rock formations are stunning! Well worth the bumps of the 4x4 road to get there!
